Welcome to the Group Website for the Yardarm Folk Orchestra.  This website will be of interest to members of the Orchestra, its supporters, those who wish to use our services and anyone else who may be interested in our work.  New members of all ages and levels of skill are welcome - whether as musicians, helpers or supporters.  If you wish to join us, book the Orchestra or a smaller group of players for a performance, or just contact us for more info then please email here

The Orchestra, founded in July 2008, was formed by members of the Thamesgate Traditional Arts Association in South Essex, UK.  Based in Southend on Sea, the Association is committed to preserving, promoting and encouraging participation in all forms of Folk Arts in southern Essex, including Southend, Rayleigh, Basildon, Wickford, Thurrock, Brentwood, Romford, Ilford and East London.  Our boundaries are nominal - we do have members from elsewhere. 

Our aim is to play music in a manner which is enjoyable to the musicians and the audience alike and we are anxious to retain the simplicity and flexibility of traditional folk music whilst ensuring that we do play as a practised orchestra.  We want to bring folk music and its traditions to as many people as possible so that these traditions, at least, do not fade away as so many others have.  We shall be looking for new players and opportunities to perform, so check back here or email us here for more information.  This is a very friendly and easy going group of people and we will make sure that you feel welcome.  There is lots of help for beginners and for those just lacking in a little confidence!  Most types of instruments will be suitable for a folk orchestra.

We are currently based at the Trinity Methodist Church Hall, Cnr London Road and Argyll Road, Westcliff on Sea, Essex, where we hold practices on the THIRD MONDAY of each month at 7.45 pm.  New members welcome.

The Orchestra is available for performances at your function or event - either as a full Orchestra or as a smaller group.  We do not charge a fee but voluntary donations are always welcome.  Whatever your requirements, please get in touch and talk to us here.
