Taylor Hobson Series Vb 460mm Anastigmat f8.0 Lens Background: From the illustrious English optical company who forged their reputation on a new era of 19th century triplet lenses comes a catalogue of lenses which offers challenges for classifying. Many of the original designs have been incorporated in modern Taylor Hobson lenses, further confusing comment on specific lenses. The Series V lenses were originally designed as f8 lenses for professional, technical and process work from focal lengths of 5" to 36". It is described as a desirable lens by the Vade Mecum with use in architecture or where the slow maximum aperture is of no consequence. 11" focal lengths were deemed suitable for whole plate format and therefore the 460mm offers a telephoto perspective with excellent coverage. Many focal lengths are impractical to use on account of the bellows demand afforded by such long lenses. Series Va lenses were noted in the British Almanac dating from 1922. These were listed as commercial lenses in f8 and f10, or as process lenses in f8 and f16. Series Vb lenses (illustrated) were defined as process lenses in f8.0, f10 and f16 for general and studio use. Waterhouse stop versions exist in brass barrels or as copper compound barrel lenses with built in aperture scales.
