Subject: What are these 0800 calls?
My wife has been getting calls from 0800 numbers.  They appear to be Data or
Fax calls because the ringtone on her Motorola is different for data and fax
calls.  The numbers are similar but never the same.  Today for example she
had 4 calls from 0800 915 7111, 0800 915 7112, 0800 915 7118 and 0800 915
7119.

Anyone have any idea what or who these calls are from and how to stop them
cos they are getting a little annoying?

TIA

Stan

so annoying you haven't rung them at no cost to yourself to see where
they originate?

Phone them back and leave the phone off the hook for an hour or two.
They'll get the message when they get the bill for the 0800 numbers..!

No it won't because they will clear back.

Some block in the USA used a nagger to repeatedly call the 800 number of a
religious organisation that had repeatedly pestered him - ran them up a bull
of ~$100k - but I don't know the result of the trial.

Anyone found out any info?

My wife had two of these calls today 0800 915 7113 and 7118. They showed
up on her Nokia as Data. Her number is on Orange and was issued about 6
years ago

I've been getting these calls too for about 2 weeks now. So far, I've
had them from 0800915 7111, 7112, 7116, 7117 and 7118. I have NOT
called them back to find out who they're from, and do not recommend
EVER calling back an unsolicited call from a number you do not
recognise (0800 or not - how do you know they won't connect you on to a
premium rate number?). My thoughts at the moment are that it is some
sort of scam, and they WANT you to call them back, as whenever I
answer, the caller immediately hangs up. Having Googled the numbers,
all I have found so far is this thread! I'm trying to find a reverse
phone directory of 0800 numbers but no luck so far. Any further
information appreciated, as I'm getting 2 or 3 of these calls a day now!

They're more than welcome to do so - if the number you dialled is 0800,
then it is free to you (from landline at least), regardless of where it
ends up routing to.

Because it isn't possible.

If you dial an 0800 and then get diverted to a premium rate number you
still won't pay - you only pay for the first number dialled. I suspect
they may be data access numbers from some company that has a callback
RAS in place.

You should report these as nuisance calls to your network operator and
maybe also to BT. Without telling you who the numbers belong to BT may
be able to approach that customer and report the problem.

0800 915 7113 belongs to a company called TRG Europe

However, the company cold-calling  me (but using that number) claim to
be called "Excell Communications" . . .
the bloke tried to sell me a mobile phone upgrade . . claimed to know I
was due an upgrade, but didn't even know my name.

File a complaint with www.tpsonline.org.uk  - it might help

I was unwilling at first to call and when I did some of the numbers where
deactivated.  Eventually I got a recorded message on one and it said that
they where TRG Europe contacting me on behalf of one of their clients and
they where sorry they missed me.

The only thing I can think of that they may be doing is collecting active
mobile numbers to sell on.

Unfortunately TPS does not take complaints about silent phone calls so I
guess we just have to put up with them.  Another idea is to make their
collection unprofitable.  A few hundred people phoning the  active numbers
back from a landline by first adding 141 to the number should make this
activity less profitable for them since they must be paying for the 0800
call.
