Well, CO2 is pretty unreactive, so it may well work for what you want.
But if you're going to all this trouble of building a strand burner,
why not just pressurise it with nitrogen? It really isn't all that
hard to do.

Thanks James,
I wondered about the affect of oxygen in the air on burn rate. How about
using CO2? It would be interesting to compair the two to see how much the
oxygen in the air does affect the burn rate.

I wouldn't expect it to create any hazardous by-products in the
combustion reaction (no more hazardous than are produced during
burning AP-based propellants anyway since they produce HCl, although
IIRC John Wickman's propellants are AN-based). However, you may find
that the oxygen in the air increases your burn rate somewhat,

I am designing a strand burner. I read in your book that one should use
nitrogen to pressurize it. You also recommended using propellant to create
the pressure.
However, I am wondering if using air to pressurize the chamber is
acceptable. I can buy a high pressure hand pump for $100 made for
pressurizing air guns. It is rated for 3000 psi and comes with a gauge. From
