Subject: Constant retune messages since Granada DSO phase 1
Ever since the first phase of the DSO on 4th Nov my Panasonic recorder
(DMR-EX79EB) has been putting up messages about additional DVB channels.
I've been through the autoscan setup process about 6 times since 4th Nov
but still the message appears every time I switch the recorder on.

I've checked to see if all channels are present - as far as I can tell
everything is correct. I receive my signal from the Lancaster transmitter.

Is anyone else having this problem?
Any ideas as to what may be causing it?

have you tried a reset to defaults and then retune.

Yes - also on a Panasonic recorder and on a Panasonic TV.

>Any ideas as to what may be causing it?

No idea, but it doesn't seem to be related to the Granada area as I am
in Hampshire.  Only solution is to switch off the "New Service
Announcement" in the options.

Same here with a different Panasonic recorder. Maybe it's a Panasonic
thing. I haven't yet decided whether the best way to keep it happy is to
say yes or no to the re-scan, as a few days after the first DSO event it
lost all its digital channels (and my programmed recording list!) for no
apparent reason. I think I had mostly been accepting the scan for
additional channels up to then, so since the 2nd DSO event I've been
saying no every time, and it hasn't happened again. Maybe that's the way.

As well as this irritating message on the Panasonic every time I switch it
on, I have a Humax recorder which has put all the BBC channels above 800
(but at least they're there - I thought at first it might be incapable of
working with the new signals and eventualy turn into a digital doorstop).
I'm going to wait until after the 3rd and (hopefully) last DSO event
before I can be bothered to tinker about with attenuators or to try
factory resets, as I'd probably have to do it all over again. When I was
young, if you tuned a receiver it jolly well stayed tuned, and those were
the days when some receivers were tuned with pulleys and string! Such is
progress.

Maybe its getting confused when the channels come on which are limited
times, rather than obeying the standards.

Yes, I do get annoyed with the blanket term retune these days, when often
what they really mean is reallocate. IE the tuning is the same, but the
channels on the signals move about.

More or less the same thing with my Panasonic LCD TV.  I thought it was due
to high pressure conditions as it is very intermittent, but I'm not so sure
now.  Seems to happen once every few weeks. I've just got used to using the
"exit" button on the remote.

This afternoon I reset the box to what Panasonic call Shipping Condition,
disconnected from the mains for a minute, and did a first time setup.
Unfortunately this did not cure the problem.

So I've had to go into the setup menu and turn off the New Channel Messages.

Will have put a Postit sticker on the screen to remind myself to retune on
2nd December ;-)

I switch off the message every time I come across a Panasonic
nowadays.

With all Humax items, I go to "Edit Channels"..(ok), "Edit Channel
Lists"..(ok), "Select All"..(ok), "Delete"..(ok), "Group"..
(ok),.."Radio"..(ok).."Select All"..(ok), "Delete"..(ok),    Then
"Exit", Then (ok) to save settings, then Auto Search.

This avoids factory reset and loosing customised settings but does let
the box start tuning from scratch so that it gets the channels in the
right places.

Thanks for the info. At least I know not to bother with this.

Never noticed this, but I'll have a look for it if the re-scan messages
persist after Dec 2nd.

See the Philips DTR220 thread - Winter Hill's service tables are currently
full of errors, which I'm willing to bet are the cause of your re-scan
messages.
