Have a bad problem with big toes holing all my walking socks, tried many
different makes and  priced socks including some of the types with the
reinforced heal and toe but haven't found any I would say where particularly
outstanding. Any one suffering from a similar problem that can recommend a
particular brand I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

I know for a fact that when I've let my toenails go untrimmed, both
socks and toes have suffered.  Do you keep your big toenails well trimmed?

A while ago I had a similar problem. I was using a range of socks at that
time and was going through a pair of smartwool socks in five or six walks. I
did try several makes and have now settled on Bridgedale. I am now on my
second pair in three years and I walk/climb perhaps between 60 and days in a
year. Bridgedale have a range of socks from quite light summer ones for use
in say approach shoes to those that are very suitable for winter. I do tend
to use the heavy duty ones all year round though.

Like Alan, I suggest you look at toe nails first rather than spend time on
what might be a fruitless search.  I have to be especially careful with
mine since the shapes to toe and nail combine to make my nails pretty
effective machetes if left to grow for too long.

Toe nails are defiantly not the problem I always have them timed right back
I think the problem is more a case of the big toe rising up as I put the
pressure on and then straightening as the foot lifts again causing the wear,
I also notice the big toe's pushing the top of soft shoes up while walking
so this seems to support my upward toe theory.

New feet?

Do you file your big toe nails smooth after cutting them?  If you leave
sharp edges or corners, they can cut their way through socks quite nicely.

Some folks have toes that turn up at the end.  My mum has, and they have
been known to cut through a leather shoe in a few weeks.

Make sure there is plenty of room virtically in the toe box of the
walking boot.  Take care of the toenails too...  And don't wear socks
that are too small.  One size does NOT fit all.

I have a preference for socks with loop stitching - such as the Coolmax
variety bought in Millets.  Of course I wear through the toes in spite
of tripping the big toe-nails carefully.  My prime consideration  in
sock purchase is the tightness of the hem - they must of necessity be on
the slack side.

with this ij mind, to keep a good pair of socks alive for longer
periods, I meticulously darn any small hole that appear, or in fact any
signs of wear appearing in the toe area.

I find I can extend the life of a pair of socks by months by this
method.  Of course having several pairs on a rota is a must.

I would argue that supports the toenail theory;  Your toe, and therefore
your toenail, are pressing the sock up against your shoe and slowly
cutting their way through.

Nope as I say toenails are trimmed so short that skin only would bring sock
and boot into contact.

And through decent shoe leather!  Toenails is tough.

I don't think that toenails are the problem thy trimmed so short and no
sharp edges that it's got to be the shape or movement of toe that's causing
the wear, so I believe the only solution (other than toe removal) is to find
harder wearing sock.
