I'd drive to the summit of the Snake Pass, and walk from there.
It's mostly paved at first, but there is still a good pull up from  Mill
Hill to the Edge, but plain sailing after that.

I think I worked out the out and home distance to be about 8 miles.

Gordons route is a good one. Slightly shorter would be to park
at Bowden Bridge near Hayfield and follow the William Clough
route to Ashop Head and then it's just a short pull up onto Kinder
and an almost level walk to the Downfall. There's a fairly obvious
and well-worn short-cut back West down the ridge to the north
of Sandy Heys, but watch your knees.

<Shudder>!
The dreaded William Clough!
I've climbed it a few times, but would never descend it with dodgy
knees.
