Planning a long day on the fells around Buttermere soon, could anyone tell me if there is any free parking in or between Buttermere and Gatesgarth Farm. If not any idea on prices for pay parking for a full day starting early morning till late evening? Thanks, MP

Thanks wasn't sure if you could still park there, someone said there was a lot of restriction in the valley these days and it's a good while since I was there last.

The NT car parks were all about £5 for a full day last time I went up there. There is quite a bit of free parking on the honister pass, although it's a very windy road if you intend to walk back towards Buttermere ?

Thanks for this. Planning on getting up to Hay Stacks - High Crag - High Stile - Red Pike at present but the day could well be extended havent quite decided yet.

The car park at the west end of Rannerdale Knotts is free, near the base of the Lad Howes ridge to Grasmoor. Cinderdale Common is the area. Room for about a dozen cars, I got in OK at 10am last month, on a weekday.

A good reason not to pay IMO, considering the vandalism done in the name of "repairs".

I think Gatesgarth might be £3, but I'm not sure. I thought the NT car park was more, but again, I could well be wrong.

Yes, lots of people park on the verge up the Newlands road. On busy days you may need to get there early, and/or park quite a long way from the village.

Some of these car parks are like magnets for all the (other ) tourists By finding somewhere out of the way to park you can steer clear of the masses a bit. Anyway, interestingly, according to my research some camp sites up there are only £5 a night, which presumably includes parking ? I would happily pay that I guess.
