SMS service options
(I'm sure this topic has been done before, but can't find anything in my archives!) Looking at cheap/free options for texting the explorers with (e.g.) weekly programme reminders etc. What services have people used for this? Ideally I'm after something with an API so I can automate the process, but that's getting tekky!... more »

Neckers (Scarves)
Is there any restriction on the colours or pattern that you can use? My lot want cheetah print and I can't see why not at the moment. They wanted cow print at first but another unit is already using that.

Scarves with logos... ARGHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have just been given a new batch of scarves by the host group, and they have embroidered logos, in the point. Have you tried sewing a badge on and avoiding the logo? Either the badge has to go higher up or you obscure half the logo, both of which looks crap. Oh well back to third party suppliers again. :(... more »

The Great Sell-Off and Business Models
My County camp site, PACCAR Chalfont Heights, successfully raised enough money to purchase their freehold, during "The Great Sell-Off" - the plan for "Centres of Excellence". Many more sites have had the same experience - Walton Firs, Broadstone Warren, etc. I'm wondering how much of an impact this will have had on... more »

Strange
Some time ago I wrote a letter in Young People Now in my capacity of scout leader, pointing out that scouting been stronger amongst what a report had called white middle class young people was a result of the way goverment funded youth work and not as a result of the leaders whishing to exclude disadvantaged young people ( I know, ironic). The... more »

plagiarism
OK, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is, and trying to go back to what I think is the right way to run scouts. You probably don't agree, but I'm having a PLC, by whatever fancy name you want to call it, on Thursday. They're going to think they're running the Troop. They're inexperienced, and will need help with planning.... more »
