If we applied this thinking to all decisions nothing would ever get done
- we'd spend all our time trying to estimate the impact over the rest of

It's a serious statement: the problem at the moment is that nobody

Doesn't matter anyway. In a few years we'll all have WiFi phones and
GSM/GPRS/et al will disappear into nothingness. I'll be surprised if
the mast will even last that long.
The only reason that it hasn't happened yet, is because the operators
are trying to recup some serious money on bad technology investments

Nuclear industry.
If the UK Gov and Industry could get its fucking act together then very
large 600/1200MWe Nuclear power plants would be a new generation AGR.

That is a nice niche product for many specific locations.
Oyster 1 is live. It was developed with Queens in Belfast BTW. It
feckin huge!
I don't think Aquamarine or AW are *quite* there yet. They have
identified the power source and location but the Transducer could more
efficiently be some sort of combination wave guide and hydrostatic tube.

One could argue the toss endlessly about the subject but I do think that
with the right political environment it would be possible. But you
*still* need the right industrial entity, a conglomerate of companies,
to make it happen. Therin lies a huge challenge. Bit like making the
railways work. For that reason I don't think we have a good solution

projects or other large infrastructure investments are built without
a public subsidy anyway?

Concepts and viability are not solid: the newest reactor in the world
(in Finland) is three and a half years behind schedule and 50% over
budget. Nobody has yet worked out how to make the things properly.

Your points are valid however they have also operated for twice their
original design lives.
The financial and logistical problems faced by Nuclear are Political.
The concepts and viability are rock solid. OK there is one other
problem. The engineering and planning overheads are so enormous there

I'd try a couple of things .. first I'd turn it off, remove the battery
and reseat the ram modules and the HD .. these might need screws
undoing on the base of the laptop.
Then when you re-power it up try running with hibernation turned off.

I've had similar problems since upgrading to Win 7 just with Control Panel
showing up blank
It apparently results from an erroneous resetting of the Global Policies for
the machine.
Global Policies control (among many other things) the availability of
certain icons from the Control Panel,
and if reset or set incorrectly they can suddenly render the whole Control

This here Acer 9300 laptop has been playing up for the past
couple of weeks.
If I just shut the lid, with stuff open, it won't resume
from standby or hibernation. HD light flashes a couple of
times then it just sits there doing nothing - takes dozens
of forced power-down and re-starts, take the battery out
