It's a Met-spec bike.
I got the R80RT MOTed on Saturday somewhere it hadn't been MOTed before
[1].
The tester really seemed to know his stuff, which is a pleasant change,
and talked knowledgeably about the Harley[1], the Zed[1] and the Beemer.
Seems he worked for BMW in the late 80's, when they supplied the Met
with up-speced non-white R80RTs. At the point at which the plod changed
from Boxers to Ks (or was it Pans?) there were a small number of
Met-spec machines in stock at BMW and they were shifted onto the public
via Vincents (now Coopers?) in Reading, where I got mine in 1989.
It would appear that the up-specing isn't that exciting (floating disks,
and wiring loom etc), but it goes some way to explaining why the bike
was supplied new with such sticky rubber.
[1] It passed.
[2] Unless my memory is failing me, that's 16 year on the trot, without
so much as an advisory [3]
[3] When I booked it in they mentioned that as it was a BMW they may not
readily be able to get the parts needed to get it through [4]
[3] I told them that wasn't relevant [1]
