Drove into the new workplace this morning, to sort out some banking issues, and it took 80 minutes to cover what should have been an 11km/10 mins trundle. And that was mid-morning :(

It's shit innit? It seems to be Dullville week at work, of the usual 6 or 7 bikes, 3 have bought the dreaded contraptions inside 2 weeks.

A nice Bindit 650 will be your friend. Cheap as chips, sip fuel. Boringly reliable.

Ah, you've figured out what the roads are like. Shite, aren't they?
BTW, the next time I'm up in BRX, I'll give you a shout. I expect to be there every fortnight, on average.

Drove from Monaco to home (North Yorks.) last week (in one go, stopping only for fuel/toilet/ferry) and I must say, as I was paying the tolls in France it did strike me that the shitty roads weren't really worthy of the money I was paying heh. And then there's the French road manners/driving...

Give me French drivers over 99% of the cunts that purport to 'drive' in this country ffs. Especially on a bike.

Well, the direct back road route looks OK but it's dug up[1] with a diversion and then there was another diversion on the diversion so I ended up fuck knows where.
I'll need to go investigate if I can get a pushbike or traillie through the works, there's no way I'm going through that shit twice a day.

Cool, I don't recall the Belgian moby number off hand but the email addy in the headers is good.
[1]And when the Belgians dig up a road they do it *properly* and it's shut for months.

Hmmm, there doesn't seem to be such a thing as a "cheap as chips" bike here. The floor price for anything reasonable seems to be about €2500, and that's for pretty modest values of reasonable.

Best hack I ever had was a Kwak KLR650. Pretty gutless, but bulletproof.
I got mine for under £800 - used it for 2 years and sold it for £700.

Y'know, that's probably not a bad idea. Especially where Higgins works.

You need a commuter hack FFS, not a fancy bike. It will get left out all day in winter weather, you will drop it at 2mph in traffic, and anything respectable is likely to get nicked.
Time for a used GS500 or even a Jawa ratbike. Both are bulletproof and cheap to run. Max speed is irrelevant for a town commute. Scruffy but reliable is good. The less desireable it looks the less you will worry about it and the more likely to find it where you parked it.
