I have a six inch one that I still use to this day. Knowing the result of a calculation to 2 decimal places in a second or two is infinitely preferable to 2 hours searching for fresh batteries to find the same answer to a greater degree of accuracy in the real world. And a slide rule still works after it is dropped or dunked in tea or covered in fag ash.

I came in just after the slide rule generation and remember my old man showing me his slide rule once. It was a piece of piss to understand.
Don't ask me to remember now, mind.

What can I say, I was an extremely annoying precocious bastard.
In the secondary school we were allowed calculators, so the slide rule was promptly covered by dust and forgotten.

Yes, but this is Bruce. Bless him.

Apologies for bad form - but was it the size of this cascade that put people off adding to it, or its direction?

I still have the one that was handed down to me by my elder sister(s). [1] [2]
Available for loan on the UR.

I reckon 76 for me.
I used to love the Sci Fi writers having a rocket ship set in the future where the navigator would get out his pocket slide rule to get them somewhere over thataway ->

Mine still gets used, it is a damn sight quicker than punching buttons on a calculator, even if the calculator actually had batteries with any charge left in them.

You must be the only person in the world with a calculator without a solar panel

I think we've done this before. I was reminiscing about still using Log tables at school ...
My Cambridge Universal calculator did % and SQRT but didn't have enough horsepower for Log calculations ;)

Still got mine from when I was the lad's age, together with a Stanley Gibbons whole catalogue 1963. Loads of stamps from Gold Coast and other pre-uhuru African states, plus Venezuala. Basically anywhere father was selling machetes to. One USA high denomination stamp in the collection was valued at £10 then. I really ought to get the whole lot valued, as the lad shows now interest. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: Pe...@ps-fisher.demon.co.uk | | Voxan Roadster [ SPACE ! ] Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +----------------------------------------------------------------+

Oh Dog. One of our engineers has some valve powered thing that uses that. Causes me much amusement watching people pick it up and try to use it.
For a long while I thought he was a pretentious wanker, then it dawned on me, that calculator had been lying around in the control room for over a year, and *nobody* had stolen it...

I found a calculator easier and quicker to use than a slide rule, especially if you start with the wrong end of the slide rule and have to try again. And there are some times when 3 significant figures isn't enough.

Yea, ditto. I've stamps from all over the world in it. One or 2 were valuable back then, so no idea how much they'll fetch now.
Seems stamp collecting has been stamped (ha!) out by the nintendo generation. What are these kids gonna hand down to their kids [1] ?

Actually, the RP Cambridge Scientific looks far more advanced than my humble one :

Doesn't make any sense but it's got a lovely shine.

I just use a Casio FX570ES, it does so much more than the older calculators... including unit conversion and scientific constants.
