Artichokes and aphids

Yesterday I made a start digging up some Jerusalem artichokes. Some of the tubers near the suface had numerous white aphids on the surface. They looked just like greenfly but white with attendant ants. They were not like whitefly. Never seen this before is it common? mark

Raised beds

I'm pleased to say that I'm having decking timber delivered today which will be cut up to make raised veggie beds for house move garden - can't wait to get them all set up and filled but guess it will be the New Year now before they're ready for planting. But hey, a whole new growing year to look forward to - exciting! :D... more »

My new cloches

I don't know if anyone else is drowning in those clear plastic tubs that come filled with bird food, but I've discovered they make great free cloches for protecting plants. I'm so glad I didn't try and cram them in my recycling box! :~) Smug, or what?! Spider

The sky is a symphony of rose, gold and pale blue darkening to indigo. But I can hear the temperature dropping like a stone!

New allotment

Well actually it looks more like a bit of field that hasn't been cultivated for years. 4 poles (100 m2), all covered in couch grass. So far we have dismantled a couple of pallets and made a compost bin, but probably can't compost couch grass enough to kill it. Mares tail is also present in the area, so seeds are probably around waiting... more »

my Mahonias are a splendid sight with long spears of bright yellow flowers shooting up into the blue sky, well its blue at the moment :-) kate
