IMHO there isn't another car in the world that can compete with our good old RR when it comes to out and out luxury. Best the Japanese can do is the plasticky gimmicky Lexus, best the Yanks can do is what?? Cadillac?? Lincoln??.There isn't a "Euro-manufacturer" that comes anywhere near, except perhaps MB, but personally I think their designer has lost his way(?). All purely personal opinions, I'm sure I'll be corrected by those who (think they) know better!

Many wealthy people and heads of state appear to be trading in their BMW/Royce's in for the other German luxury car the Maybach. Perhaps they know something you don't.

The original post was spam designed to encourage people to click throught to a particular blog and get the hit rate for that site up. I doubt that the OP is interested in the answer.
Anyway, the Royce isn't a British luxury car it's a German interpretation of what a British luxury car used to be; as is the Bentley. The best of British luxury car features is found nowadays in the Range Rover and in Jaguar cars. Jaguar have led Rolls-Royce for a long time in the construction and trimming of luxury cars and manage to make a car that's good to drive instead of just being a truck with posh carpets and some nailed on wood.

Agree with you about Rolls Royce, and Bentley have only just crossed the line, having stopped production of the Arnage - the new 'posh Phaetons' just aren't the same.
Range Rover are crack-dealer chic, as are new VAG Bentleys.... which leaves Jaguar, who have totally lost their way with the XF and new XJ - both of which look like they were styled by the Koreans and the interiors designed by Matsui.
I think the pinnacle of luxury British car design was the Bentley Turbo R, followed by the Arnage Red Label and the old shape aluminium XJ-series. -- SteveH 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' Alfa 156 TSpark Sportwagon Veloce Selespeed - Alfa 75 TSpark Lusso - Ducati 750SS - BMW R100RT - Toyota Prius T-Spirit

I don't normally get involved in these sorts of posts, but........ The range rover is nothing more than an ovesized cart with suspension that crashes over bumps and slow-responding steering that has almost no feedback! The seats are comfy - they have to be, to cover up for the suspension's unsprung mass!!!

Lol, the best Jags were the series 2 XJ's for ride comfort and trim quality. The newer versions just became more and more plastic as time went on. And as for the X-type, well don't get me started! How to take a mondeo floorpan/suspension geometry design and ruin it! When I was looking to change my car about 2 years ago I took a test drive in one and was appalled at the trim quality, the ride (hard and crashy like a BMW) and the ergonomics of the thing (I had to look "around" the rear-view mirror it was mounted so low on the screen!). I eventually bought a chrysler 300c Hemi - excellent comfort, half decent trim (about mondeo quality, not bad in todays marketplace) and amazing performance. It has all the toys and gizzmos that I'll ever want or need, it's a nice place to be when you sit in it and I'm happy with it. Badger.

Lol, each to his/her own, it's seriously quick, extremely spacious, comfy, reasonably well put together (bear in mind the Euro versions were built at Magna-Steyr in Austria, not Canada) and handles pretty well for its size once you ditch the standard P7 tyres. I will admit though, that it's one of these cars that people either love or hate, no inbetween. I laugh at Merc and BMW drivers for paying so much more than I did - for less toys and performance! I've owned many different cars over the years - Jags, Alfas, BMW's, various Discoveries, Defenders and Rangerovers, Rovers, Fords, even Vauxhalls, but the Hemi is by far the comfiest and most grin-enducing by a long way. The only other car I've ever owned that I regret selling was a 1978 XJ6C, 4.2 manual with o/d. Loved that car and wish I still had it. Working in the motor trade (own and run my own garage) I get to drive a LOT of different cars, and I can honestly say I'm happy with my Hemi. I haven't driven anything else in the same price range that comes even remotely close in terms of the overall package (comfort, handling, spaciousness, toys etc.). Badger.

It's built on a Mercedes platform and I read that Alfa Romeo is now going to build a sedan on the same platform.
Chrysler cars' *styling* since the "merger" was always a bit iffy, but the underlying Mercedes platform was pretty god, IMHFO.

A £30,000 copycat Rolls-Royce? It must be made in China
Badger <brianhat...@btinternet.com> wrote: > I can honestly say I'm happy with my Hemi.
I didn't suggest that you weren't. But it doesn't handle well not by a long, long way. It doesn't even handle as well as the E-class that it was based on, and that was hardly a class leading car.
If you want a car that handles like a waterbed, it's fine. If you think that an XF or XJ handles like the X-type then you're wrong. And your comment about Jag build quality was umm a bit wide of the mark especially if you're comparing it to the Chrysler plastic fantastic with pimpmobile external styling.

Wrong. The LX platform is to a Mercedes/Chrysler joint design, but with a lot of Mercedes engineering input. It is not, however, a Mercedes platform.

Given the "sporting" credentials of Alfa-Romeo, I don't think they'd put that name on something that didn't go round corners at least acceptably, do you?

I would agree re. the driving dynamics on the original equipment tyres (P7's), but not with decent rubber fitted. All of a sudden there is grip in corners, feedback from the steering and a lot less perceived body roll. I reckon a lot of what is perceived as body roll with the P7's is actually tyre squirm and flex. The trim isn't up to BMW or Audi standards (I can't comment on Merc as I've never owned one), but it is acceptable for the intended market sector and cost of the vehicle and probably of equivalent quality (if not feel) of current Fords. Lol, but mine's a practical family estate, the Touring, not the Saloon version which does, I admit, look a touch mafia staff car. It has immense "road presence" but is nowhere as big as most people seem to think it is, just look at one parked next to a Mondeo, there isn't a lot in it. Badger.

Rubbish! You've obviously never driven one that's had decent tyres fitted then, if you've even driven one at all. And I don't just mean a run round the block.

I never said they did - I haven't driven an XF and I don't like the look of the new XJ so wouldn't be interested in driving that either.

No, listen to what I said - I run my own garage and work on these cars regularly and I can quite categorically state that the build quality of the X-type is utter rubbish compared to a lot of other vehicles, the new Mondeo included! And lets not even mention the appaling build quality and unreliable engines (cam chains) of the XJ40 style jags..... You are, of course, entitled to your opinion on style, the world would be a boring place if we all shared identical taste - God forbid, we may all have to suffer renaults, lol. Badger.

I'm surprised that noone has yet mentioned the one British luxury car marque that's more exclusive than Royce or Bentley, and that's Bristol.

If I was looking for luxury transport it wouldn't be a car or anything I had to stoop to move around in.
It would the best F'in tour bus I could get with a driver, chef and waitress.

Ugly as sin and they seem to have raided far too many bits from the Vauxhall rejects bin.

My driver in Milan has one. It's shite by comparison with my old Jag. by comnparison to any of the new jags the 300C is a bad joke. Traction control you can't turn off that cuts in far too early? Who thought of that stupid idea, oh yes, Chrysler. And it has a powerplant last used by Noah to power his Ark.

So the only Jaguar car you feel qualified to talk about is the rubbish one that Jagnuts hate?

So what? Care to compare the X-type with the Chrysler equivalent, the Neon? Or is it perhaps that 1950s hearse they sell that you want to compare it to?
Perhaps we should compare the Chrysler "PoodleShitting" to an XK Jaguar? Or compare your own monstrosity to the XJ? No, I thought that somehow you wouldn't like to do any of those things.
> And lets not even mention the appaling build quality and > unreliable engines (cam chains) of the XJ40 style jags.....
Well no, because the AJ6 and AJ16 weren't unreliable. They were the most reliable of all the jaguar six cylinder engines, easy to work on and wonderful to drive. Not just reliable compared to previous Jaguar engines either, reliable compared to Merc and BMW engines - although TBH neither had anything as good. I suspect you're doing the usual garagista thing, comparing some doggy old engine which hasn't been properly serviced with a brand new one with bugger all miles on it.
