hi, just to let you know that I've now published a page of info about the Peavey Nanovalve at www.carrew.com. This will no doubt get updated from time to time, but never regularly.
If anyone's got any other info to share about these little combos please send it on to me and I'll add it to the page.

Andrew, I read your page. I see you added a cabinet out. Wee word of caution.....You'll need to remember to watch the impedance of the cab you plug in. If it's different from the ohmage of the normal speaker you risk blowing the transformer. It's not as simple as just drilling a hole and adding a jack in parallel to the speaker. next you need to also remember that depending how you wire it you would add the internal speaker value on to it. I.E. It's an 8 ohm speaker and you have an 8 ohm 2x12 if your mod automatically cuts out the combo speaker then everything's fine. (there's a stereo jack from Maplin that can be wired to do this) if you don't have it or a switch to cut the internal speaker out of teh circuit then your going to have two 8's in Parallel giving you 4 ohms or 16 depending how it's wired.
But I'll be teaching my grannie to sucks eggs. Just thought it was worth a mention for other folks.

eggs were sucked..... <grin> if it's wrong, it's Paul C's fault as the Nanovalve with the speaker out is the one I bought from him <LOL> I've not actually added this to my other one yet. You are however spot on with the info about impedances. The transformers on the Nanovalves don't look like they'd tolerate much before going into melt down. I'm going to cut'n'paste your words onto the website until I get round to drawing a cct diag for how to wire up an external pspeaker.
cheers
now, isn't it about time we arranged a Scottish PU?

Having had a look at the Nanovalve and the Blackheart amps, I'm amazed that there isn't a whole retrofit industry based around the Nanovalve like there is for the Blackhearts. You can buy uprated transformers, tagboard circuit-board replacements, speakers, the lot, and the Blackhearts aren't that much different to the nanovalve. -- http://www.cdbaby.com/sinistralshttp://sinistrals.stevedix.de/ http://www.stevedix.de/bloghttp://www.snorty.net/ <st...@stevedix.de>

The only reason I can think of for the lack of a modding industry is that the Nanovalve is actually quite hard to modify. There really isn't much space around the PCB. This makes adding additional components not so easy to do. Even things like changing capacitors for higher values is difficult as there isn't enough space to fit the larger caps. For example the volume control and input jack are directly mounted on the pcb. This means the gap between the PCB and the front panel is very small indeed. Therefore, adding any additional controls - tone, master volume etc which could be electronicly easy, ends up being a physical/mechanical nightmare. I've been in touch with the French guy who has the video of his modded Nanovalve on youTube. He's going to send me information on how he did it, which will be very interesting indeed. I don't know how he managed to fit the tone and master volume pots in. I'm considering adding FX loops, and I think the hardest part will be finding somewhere to locate two jack sockets.
I'll take some pictures the next time I have one of my Nanovalves in pieces to show just how tightly packed everything is.

I would have thought if you wanted the tone and master volume it would be easier just to pay the extra for the Royal 8, which is basically the Nanovalve with tome/master. By the time you'd paid someone to fit the extras, you might as well have bought it, AND you'd still have the warranty.

two points Steve <grin>
1) I'm not paying anyone to do the mods. 2) I like tinkering with amps. 3) it's a learning process
on that basis, I'm happy doing what I do with the nanovalves. oh, and I can't count.
