I've just found out there's a film coming out about Joe Meek.  They
certainly seem to have done their homework on it, from what I've been
told.

Has anyone seen the stage play that it's based on?

No, but I saw the film two weeks ago (weekend of release).

I had to travel a fair way to a cinema that was showing it and whilst the
Barking multiplex was heaving with families queuing to see "Terminator 83"
and paying 4.50 a pop for popcorn and 3.25 for a half-litre bottle of
water, there were no more than about ten people in the theatre showing
"Telstar" (including JN Jnr and I).

The film doesn't actually display all that much to indicate that its origins
were on the stage. There is no doubling of parts and no obvious placing of
famous conversations in the mouths of people known not to have taken prt in
them (cf "A Man For All Seasons" for an example of the opposite).

However, as with almost all rock'n'roll movies (and many showing recent
social history), there are several jarring physical inaccuracies. They get
the Clavioline right, but don't look too closely at the guitars (a Gibson
ES-137 in 1962, anyone?).

Con O'Neill's portrayal of Meek is spellbinding. But then, I've never seen
him deliver anything but the highest quality of performance.

There's a trailer online somewhere, too...

Hang on...

I managed to miss its run, but a friend saw it and was highly
impressed.

I think I've only seen him in Criminal Justice, but he was certainly
very good in that.

Watched the movie last Saturday . Must say i found it very black .and
nothing about how he got from his garden shed to the flat above the
handbag shop .Blackmores parts seemed odd . Never seen him use the
White Gtetch before . Without doubt too much information was left out
in my book .

The guitar line-up was totally lacking in verisimilitude. The Outlaws did use
a Hofner Senator Bass (as in the movie) at one time, but when they were
making money, they swapped it for a Gibson EB2. Blackmore's guitar should
have been a blonde 335 (the nearest they got was a cherry 330). Heinz was
never pictured with a Getsch White Falcon. The Tornados didn't use Burns
guitars or a 2000+ Gibson ES-137...

There... I've said it.

I'll get me anorak...

Apparently that WAS the actual Höfner Senator bass.  Chas Hodges leant
it to them.

I *thought* it was a precarious angle.
