what is Power Factor
I have a Lidl unit that measures how much electricity something is using - it also measures the 'Power Factor' My reading is that a Power Factor of 1 is good and 0.5 means it is using twice as much electricity as it needs to. Am I correct? I also read (I'm planning to give up reading) that you can adjust the Power... more »

Hanging a chandelier?
Two chandeliers, one small, one medium. At present they're on chains from a screwed in hook plate, with a tin bucket rose over chocolate block. For easier cleaning I'd like to replace this with a slide-in connector. Klik do their well-known one, there's also the Lewden ceiling maestro that TLC sell.... more »

Treating rusty steel.
I have some car bits which are rusty and no longer available new. Secondhand parts are likely no better. They aren't structural - they just hold the rubber seal to the sunroof. Don't even show. Too complicated a pressing to make new - or at least for me. I cleaned some down to bare metal, treated with Jenolite, sprayed on zinc rich primer and finished... more »

OT - UPS - any experts out there ?
HI Folks We seem to be getting more & more short duration (5 seconds, maybe) power outages (local Electricty folks looking into it - but apparently it's somewhere on a 5km stretch of cabling between here & the village - and, as it's self-resetting, it's difficult to trace / fix). So - thinking UPS for the 3 pc's here.... more »

Best tool for cutting / resizing blinds ?
Hi, I've bought some standard run of the mill blinds from "Ponden Homes ( MIlls) " and unfortunately the width of 90cm is slightly too large for my window - I will probably have to trim this down to about 86 cm . I was wondering what would be the best tool for the job, obviously something which gives a nice clean cut.... more »

Smeg dishwasher Error code e8
I've just fixed my smeg dishwasher that was showing error code e8. This error indicates that the 'alternate valve' is misbehaving. Thought that others might like to know how to fix it... The alternate valve is in the bottom of the machine roughly in the middle (turn it on it's side and pop off the plastic bottom plate). I... more »

Gledhill thermal stores - still in business?
Am I going mad[1] or didn't Gledhill's thermal store business go belly-up a few months ago? I'm sure I remember it being discussed here. Can't find a reference to it on th'interwub, and their web site (at least) looks as though it's still in business (see [link] -> Download)... more »
