chamois sandwiched around a bit of cardboard?

If you've been to the obvious places (fabric shop, charity shop to see
what you could cut up) then it's making it up time unless you've got a
sofa maker near you maybe?

Yup - charity shop - look for something like the uppers on a pair of
boots. Secondhand shoes never sell well, so should be easy to find.

Even better is to ask the staff at the charity shop. They may well
have "unsaleable" boots in the back storeroom, maybe a damaged sole or
fastener.

I buy my leather over the summer, at medieval re-enactor events. I get
to handle it before I buy, and the range / price / quality are better
than I'd find otherwise.  Otherwise Le Prevo leather (Newcastle) are
good for mail order, tools etc.

Not sure if it's suitable, but Classic Marine sell leather for
anti-chafing gear on traditional boats:

http://www.classicmarine.co.uk/product.asp?product=160&cat=53

They'll sell any sized/shaped piece, and seem like friendly people you
can ring up and discuss it with if you're not sure it's what you need.

Pete
