Even better is to ask the staff at the charity shop. They may well have "unsaleable" boots in the back storeroom, maybe a damaged sole or fastener.
I buy my leather over the summer, at medieval re-enactor events. I get to handle it before I buy, and the range / price / quality are better than I'd find otherwise. Otherwise Le Prevo leather (Newcastle) are good for mail order, tools etc.
