Ian,
I have been doing research before ordering my next iMac.
Saw an item addressing your exact concern, and it sounds very
significant.
The advice was to connect with Firewire cable and use Backup to move
only the data files.
Apparently one can also use the old iMac as an external storage disk
for the new iMac.

After dropping my iPhone and breaking my MacBook's keyboard, I got the
iPhone back today.
But it's not working.
The bottom row of buttons on the soft keyboard doesn't work - pushing
them selects the row above.
Strangely, that part of the screen works when the keyboard isn't there.
Googling suggests a screen fault, but I'm not convinced.

The mobile broadband is actually very reliable, and pretty fast
(although not as fast as a current adsl connection). It is a great thing
to have.
However it is probably not the thing you need to pare down your costs,
unless you just have that.
There are plenty of cheap broadband packages about with phone and stuff,

Indeed, I ripped out the Airport card
and replaced it with a PCMCIA Belkin.
Still not great, but clearly better,

oh doh yes of course - head full of many things here.
ah goddit. Current and ongoing things - credit crunch and lack of
employment - are making me suddenly want to pare down my costs to
nothing. But as a friend just reminded me, quality costs money, and I'm
used to having a pretty good service, even if not fast enough perhaps.

I didn't. I said that maybe if I was living on my own, and didn't have a
home phone line, maybe I wouldn't have an adsl line either, as it is
above the performance that I had a few years ago.
No. I carry it round with me with my little mac (FauxSX) for internet
access. It works very well.

Probably loads, but I never really did spectrum stuff.
Outbid on a psu that I probably didn't need. Oh well. And the logic
analyser is way out of my budget.
Ironically, I had one of those briefly 22 years ago!
