Lambeth Playground Group have been campaigning aginst the Council's
plans to build over the Adventure Playground in Kennington Park since
October last year.
We were at the Executive meeting last year when the Clapham Pool people
were arguing that there was no option in the papers at that stage which
would allow people the option to choose to keep the pool at all.
We followed the pool campaign and were hoping that you were still
campaigning hard right up to the election-which you obviously were. We
were also hoping it would have an impact on the elections-which it did.
It was good to visit your site after May 4th and see how active you
have been.
We were doing similar things here in relation to threats to close
children's playrounds and so on.
Plans to build a pool in Kenningon park (where the adventure playground
is)we felt were all tied up with plans to sell off Brixton Rec,Clapham
Pool and the ex-Lilian Baylis School site in Kennington, which is a huge
site, currently used for community Sports activities and which was being
lined up for a big luxury flat type development. The whole 'revitalise'
thing was completely stupid and a con in our view.
So far we have succeeded in saving our adventure playground. The
council are wecome to build a pool some where in North Lambeth, but we
are opposed in principle to the idea of building over any existing
pools,playgrounds,community sports centres,school sites,nature gardens
or whatever to pay for it.
We intend to keep going and hope you do too.         Jane Dixon-Halsall
