Right the useful things.....
I have really enjoyed the VTS...
1. I like they fact that it is essentially run by us as per adult
education. By doing the sessions ourselves we are able to develop our
skills as Teachers / educators and it gives a valuable oppurtunity for
feedback which is always constructive. We have been encouraged to
"think outside the box" for the sessions we run in both choice of
topic and mode of delivery and it is rare that any of us give a
straight forward Lecture / powerpoint presentation
2. I have most enjoyed the sessions that are interactive and learn
best this way. I like the sessions we have run as osces / splitting
into small groups to concentrate on consultation skills.
3. The sessions that have been focused on exam preparation whether
this be sessions about the structure of the MRCGP but especially the
CSA simulation was very valuable bacause it was relevant which helps
us to feel that our exam worries are being addressed and it was very
similar to the real thing
4. I feel the residentials are an essential part of the VTS. It
provides a real sense of cohesiveness and enables the development of a
support network that is extremely valuable throughout your time on the
VTS - this is both good for morale and also gives us an oppurtunity to
chat to each other about the VTS / What to expect / what everyone is
doing re courses / exams etc and gives you an idea as to whether you
are doing all the right things to prepare for the real world!.... Oh
and they're bloody good fun too!!!
5. The sessions at the end of the half day with your small group I
find very helpful as a sounding board / a time to address problems/
share problems / be heard / help others if you can..... help keeps me
sane!
Ok .... constructive ideas for improvement...
1. Although It would be dull if we purely concentrated on exam stuff -
I think a bit of time set aside towards medical topics would be
useful . By this I mean perhaps a very brief session each week for
10-15mins by a couple of us on a hot topic/ guideline/ Stats...that
will help us in General practice... that could be very useful....
2. I liked the sessions ran in the past along the lines of ..... what
the F*** do I do with this... by Neil et al that addressd all the
things in general practice that no one tells you about until you get
there..... if a group did one of those each term could be very useful
3. Ok I'm a bit stuck now ..... hope this is useful.
