Description: History & events of World War Two. (Moderated)

Most maneuverable fighter.
In a discussion with someone the other day, this subject came up. We kicked around the usual suspects- P-51 Mustang; Spitfire, ME-109, Zero. But- I remember reading several years ago that the real answer was the twin-engined P-61 Black Widow night-fighter; the P-61 could reportedly turn INSIDE a Spitfire!... more »

Was Hitler a beliver in theism?
Hitler was an opportunist and a liar. What he said often should not be believed. Still all we have on this question are his comments. So here is a page here on Hitler's religious beliefs which discusses several of his comments [link] My question is do you think that Hitler believed in some form of theism?... more »

Eisenhower vs. Devers on crossing the Rhine
In a NY Times Op-Ed piece on Monday, [link] it's claimed that the war in Germany could have ended sooner had Eisenhower not disliked Devers. I'd be interested to read the other side of the story (here or in cited sources), i.e. that Eisenhower's decision not to let Devers cross the Rhine was sound strategy.... more »

Hesitation led to Bulge?
Going from France to Germany, the eastern advance of the Western Front, had set-backs, like Market Garden here's an opinion, [link] claiming Ike was too conservative. Was he? Ken

Noob Question about ENIGMA
Hi, a question about code-breaking in WWII: Correct me If I'm wrong, but basically it worked like that: German radio traffic was encrypted wit ENIGMA machines and settings that were changed daily. In Bletchley Park, they had a nifty machine (or many) that could go trough all possible settings (usually within a few hours), so it... more »

Norden Bombsight
Did the USA share it with any other allies? If not, what were the Allies using in its place? Craig

Gestapo Documentary
I tuned in to part of a documentary "Gestapo" and heard something surprising (to me). The documentary asserted that the Gestapo was in charge of drafting foreign workers/slave laborers and controlling them in Germany. This seems a bit far afield from a political secret police, but one never knows in Nazi Germany. Was this information... more »

WWII in HD
I've been watching this program on the History channel and I must say that after seeing thousand of hours of documentaries on WWII for the last 55 years or so I am watching film of combat events that I've never seen before. Where did they get all this new film? I would say about 90% is never-before seen film, at least none that I've ever seen... more »

Japan's Emperor Marks 20th Year - Inouye
(one newsgroup deleted, one added) ...IMHO, there is an interesting second part to that story. (From "Desperate Siege, The Battle of Hong Kong" by Ted Ferguson, 1980) "On the morning of April 22, 1947, (IJA) Sgt. Inouye Kanao faced the bench in a Hong Kong courtroom to hear Chief Justice Sir Henry Blackall pronounce sentence.... more »

Air war on the Eastern Front: good overview sources?
I'm looking for a book recommendation. I think I would like to learn something about the air war on the Eastern Front. It's not a subject that gets much play, even from Eastern Front specialists - the ground battles are the usual focus, especially the tanks. What I'd like to get, if possible, is a narrative... more »
