NEW DELHI: Dalit Teenage inmates of Mother Teresa's
Ashram in Delhi have fallen victims to a Bitter power-
struggle going on between Italian volunteers and Ashram
monks. So much so, that some of these mentally retarded
toddlers were saved by a whisker when the warring parties
let loose their anger on them to score their points.
"Deepashram", founded by Mother Teresa in Gurgaon, is
home to more than 75 Dalit orphans of different age
groups.The Ashram, which is manned by Missionaries of
Charity (Contemplative Fathers), fell from the grace
after the Italian volunteers smelled rat in the affairs
of the orphanage.They took up the matter with the Holy
See in Rome and filed complaint with the Vatican
representative (Nuncio) in Delhi, alleging ill treatment
and torture of the inmates by monks and seminarians.
Dr Franco, an Italian citizen and one of the parties to
the complaint, said that the friars put teenage inmates
of the Ashram into hardship.The children are neither
given nutritious food nor good clothes and playing
objects. Besides, the doctor added, children were often
given wrong treatment/medicines for wrong reasons.To make
life miserable for friars, Franco also submitted,
photographs of children being tortured and ill treated
along with his complaint to the Holy See and the Vatican
representative.In his complaint he also alleged that
Ashram was fleecing money collected in the name of the
orphanage kids.
However, according to the Ashram management, Dr Franco, a
neurologist, came to the Ashram as a Mother Teresa
volunteer and began to find fault with the treatment
given to the mentally retarded children. After he
administered certain drugs to the mentally retarded
children, some of them became frail and began to shiver.
The condition of another worsened and he was taken to St
Stephen Hospital in Delhi. After Dr Franco used ‘wrong
medicines' on the children, Ashram management decided to
stand up against Dr Franco and his fellow volunteers,
including an Italian native called Santra.
According to the management, Santra was caught red-handed
by the Ashram authorities when she was collecting money
in the name of children and "Deepashram".Subsequently,
the management asked her to withdraw the Internet
advertisement she had put up in the name of Mother Teresa
and the Ashram. This way, she had managed to collect
lakhs of euros and is planning to set up another
orphanage Business. They also alleged that Santra trying
to corrupt the religious minds of the seminarians.
According to the management, the middle-aged Santra has
seduced one of their senior colleagues, aged 30, and is
now has a live-in relationship with him.
Now both sides decided to act tough against each other.
On their part, the volunteers approached the Holy See and
the nuncio with fresh batch of photo, which show children
being tortured, by ashram seniors, their hands being
tied, the stygian condition prevailing at the children's
dormitory and their shabby clothing, among others. And
the monks, in turn, denied access to volunteers to
children's home. Commenting on the torture of children,
Ashram superior, Brother Tony said, "We have tied the
hands of some of the mentally retarded children. And
