Tire-track question
In 1884, the question of the ridge in the middle of a smooth tire-track in dust (but not in mud) arose on one of RBT's ancestors. The second explanation sounds more plausible. Cheers, Carl Fogel AN UNSOLVED TRICYCLE PROBLEM. [1189]—Can any of your tricycling readers tell me why a rubber tyre leaves a double rut in dust, and a single one in mud? The fact is... more »

Kranich: Why Hydraulic Rim Brakes, Not Discs?
Just read Andre's .PDF on his Kranich - which seems tb built for durability/long wear. Given that rim brakes eventually wear out the wheel; given that Kranich's wheels are special items; and given that even mechanical discs give sufficient power/modulation - my uninformed reaction is that the bike would be more durable with disc brakes.... more »

nipple washers of fibre
Use fibre washers under nipple heads. Yup. Forgot where I came across this little bit of info (online) but seems reasonable in the aid of providing a conformable seat for the nipple head. Which means you cant then blame the nipple shape for tearing a rim without ferrules or eyelets.

RoadRat Buildup Report
Finally I have declared the buildup finished. There is the small issue of the HeBe Chainglide but I won't fix that until I have some single speed(narrow) chain ring bolts. So, this is where it all started, many thanks to Paul Dexter at Cotic for answering many fuckwitted questions. [link]... more »

Shifter pod interchangability
My dad's ST-M560 (Deore LX 3x7/Cantilever) shifters are quickly giving up the ghost, gunking up so that attempts to pull cable don't catch, and the lever has free throw. He's flushed them with carburetor cleaner, which gets them working for a while, but we're seeing diminishing returns each time. Wild theory here, but a look at the still-available SL-MC40 levers... more »
