Subject: Anyone replace Phil BB bearings themselves?
Hi,
I need to change out the bearings in a Phil BB.  In the past, I have mailed
them in to Phil and have also tried having a local bearing shop change them
out.  I thought I wanted to look into what it would take to do them myself
and see if I could save some money.  The bearings look like a pretty simple
press in if I can press the old ones out.  Has anyone done this or have any
pointers?
Thanks!
Lyle

I bought my PW's way back in 1980 and they're still running on the
original bearings. I don't know how many miles, I stopped counting
sometime after 50,000.

Sorry, but since I've never had to change them I really can't help you.

I'm running one that I bought back in 1975. I've had it installed in 4-5
bikes including one used for a lot of off road riding. I checked the seals
and the grease still looked soft and fresh about a year and a half ago
when I put it into another old frame. It's rarely been exposed to water so
that may be one of the reasons for it's longevity.

Chas.

Unlike other posters, I've ruined a few sets of bearing in a PW bb.
I've sent it back to Phil too. I now just buy 30 dollar Shimano sealed
bb's.

But you could give this a try:

Put the crank bolt or a sacrificial equivalent on one side of the bb
axle and tap the bolt with a nice ball peen hammer to drive out the
opposite bearing while supporting the outer edge of the bb housing in
a vise.  Flip and use the axle to drive out the other bearing. If the
bearing comes apart, us a piece of appropriately sized copper pipe to
fashion the equivalent of a fork crown race removal tool to drive out
the outer race. Or just wing it with a long drift.

Purchase appropriately sized bearings and press them into the bb
housing using the vise, the old bearings, or an appropriately sized
socket (you want to drive the bearing in by the outer race, but you
don't want to deform it or the housing). Don't forget the axle before
you press in the second bearing!

That's how I used to do it on my VW bug.
