J.R.R. TOLKIEN. THE LORD OF THE RINGS. London: George
Allen & Unwin. 1960. 3 volumes. 1st editions - 8th impression of
volume one, 7th impression of volume two, 6th impression of
volume three. Identical format to the first printings, unrevised
text. A fine set in dust wrappers, marginal tanning to red ink on
spines. A brilliant set. Housed in the original publisher's slipcase
of grey paper-covered boards with printed paper label affixed to
one side.

The publisher's special boxed edition - which I have never seen
before. Hammond and Anderson [J.R.R. TOLKIEN - A
DESCRIPTIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY, 1993] state "Beginning in
autumn 1957, A5a (The Lord of the Rings) was sold both as
separate volumes and as a set. A set of the regular trade edition,
1962 impressions, has been seen in a slipcase covered in light
grey imitation leather with a printed label." We offer here a copy
of this set, in earlier impressions than seen by the bibliographers.
