Raz's Percussion Pad
rhythms, info & practice tips

Each month's newsletter will have an article on a particular Brazilian or Cuban percussion instrument and/or music style.

This month's topic: The Repinique (for samba)

The repinique (or repique) is a cylindrical double-headed drum with a metal shell of about 30 cm in depth. It has nylon heads at the top and bottom which are tuned by tightening metal rods, typically between 6 and 12 in number, that run down the outside of the shell.

It is carried over the shoulder and rests at around waist height.  In the Rio samba style, the players use a stick and hand technique to play a repetitive pattern that drives the rhythm along whilst strongly emphasising the pulse.

Repiniques with 6 tuning lugs are the most popular as the gap between them allows easier access for the hand to strike the drum.

There are several tones played with the stick including open tones, rim shots & buzz strokes and there are open tones and slaps played with the hand.

A lead repinique player performs a range of functions including making calls and signals that others respond to. The drum is tuned very high so that it can cut through the rest of the ensemble.

In a large group there may be several repinique players with one or two taking on the role of making calls.

The attached PDF file contains notation of some warm up exercises and basic patterns for you to practise. The accompanying audio samples are at a slow speed so that you can clearly hear the different tones.

The content of the PDF file should be considered purely as a reference. I recommend that you listen to recordings of samba played at a range of speeds in order to understand the proper 'swing'.
