edges of the M8 motorway between Stewart St. and Springburn Police
Station, and in Garnethill.
The supposition, in the first instance, was that monks or friars had a
presence on this stretch of land - in fact the motorway at this point
follows the old Monklands Canal banks, the embankments of which were
productive in the "allotment" sense, so the trees would have been
planted, not grown from seed, by those who worked or lived by the canal,
in the late 19c. Any other information?
Garnethill, a drumlin farmed in the mid-18th century by the Harley
family, great benefactors in Glasgow, who did great experimental work in
dairying procedures, gave free milk to the citizens of glasgow, grew all
sorts of crops and fruit, on Dutch lines, and would of course had
orchards for crop and drainage purposes at the foot of each slope of the
hill. The Garnet family, who later owned the land, built huge
properties agin on both sides of the hill, with fashionable gardens - it
was the west-end of the day, a legacy from garden planting then perhaps?
