Hi Paul

I'm really interested in this idea. Just experiencing the process would be exciting.

The Coding Kwoon session I did at NWRUG got lot of people talking about doing a longer session, perhaps at a BarCamp. Would the FTC venue be suitable for a day/afternoon-long Coding Kwoon? Needs a projector and a load of chairs.

Well, im impressed.

I have 10 large datafile ( plus 4gb of data each) that I play about with, its the grace note list of artists, releases etc..

My old simple script was ruby, active record and mysql, to import 8 and a half million rows.

This used to take around 24 minutes, and eat my processor and ram for fun.

Well, after a lot of fixing of the gems ( mostly deprecated syntax and such
) I got it installed, but now I get the weirdest error. Basically everything
works except from the fact that, when I'm running a file that uses the
library, when the interpreter should exit ( i.e. after reading all the lines

Hi all,

I've been fiddling around with a linguistics
library<[link]>for ruby that
has a link parser module which wraps around the link-grammar
from abiword and I'm having some trouble getting things to work together.

Has anybody ever used this ?

I've just thought... do you or anyone else have a Mini-DVI to VGA
adapter? Mine keeps going on the blink, unless it's my MacBook
itself. This one works, but generally takes 10 mins of fiddling to
get the colour right.

This one is gonna be a community effort :)

I can rustle up a couple of apple keyboards, but we will have plane
"dell" type mice. (but lets be honest, mightmice suck :p). Will save
people lugging stuff around :)

Hi all

Anyone got a spare Apple keyboard and a mouse they can bring to NWRUG? It will be better if we have two of each on the night, so my MacBook can go in the middle. All my keyboards have Dvorak stickers on them.

I can bring my mice with me, as I've got two identical ones, but would save lugging them around if someone from Manchester has a pair. (Having different mice is a pain for pairing, as the tracking speed will be different.)

with Sinatra::Application.environme nt() and
Sinatra::Application.environme nt=(), so I'll crack on with that.

It does have the configure blocks, where you can set app attributes
depending on the environment, like so:

configure :development do
@db_url = "postgres://usr:pwd@localhost"
end

So there must be a mechanism. I'll keep searching!

Im not sure that is actually available in Sinatra, so same on local as on production really..

I use Sinatra often, for ease, but if you want a full test suite and environments, rails comes into play...

Interesting, thankyou.
It doesn't seem to cover where the deployment environment comes from,
though.
For example, if you use a configure block, where does the app get the fact
that it is in development mode (or test, or production) from?
I've dumped the ENV hash to the console, and still can't see any deployment

That would be handy, currently I'm just using JSLint in textmate but
having it automatically run with my specs incase I forget to run it in
textmate would be awesome.

Sinatra is rack compatible, so if you apache or nginx config is using ssl, your reverse proxys will still be over ssl

I like the blog. I've also started writing a lot more JavaScript later, since we started doing more of our UI in Dojo. And actually, the more I've used JavaScript, the more I've got to like it. It's got some serious faults, but I love the classless OO and first-class functions. JS is a sobering reminder just how big the Ruby language is.

This is not strictly Ruby-related, but many of us Ruby hackers are web-
developers in general, so I thought this might be of interest...

Although still chiefly a Ruby developer, I've had much more to do with
Javascript recently but I've had trouble finding many technically-

I said I'd keep my eyes peeled.

Is it also worth doing a nwrug wave or something, for kicks?
I'm trying to like it, but even the hype is not making it that
interesting - its also slow as heck.
