We saw the interview with Mr. Benson and we were really inspired by
what we read. We are a new mobilisation (Muslim Community Helpline)
based on a charity which operated for almost 19 years (Muslim Women's
Helplin). We found ourselves ground down by the changes to the way in
which the voluntary sector evolved during the 80s and 90s and our
experiences echo many of the things Mr. Benson talks about. We are
now home based, refusing to apply for any grants or register with any
bodies and we deliver a small scale but client-centred service on a
shoe-string but stress-free budget. We support individuals such as
carers who have been complaining for a long time that many originally
voluntary organisations which become mainstream charity organisations
change to become an end in themselves with huge pyramid-like
structures to support and so lose the client focus. In our previous
incarnation, we were becoming that sort of an organisation - but
without the huge amounts of funds and division of labour required to
sustain it and it became very difficult.
