Subject: cuts to black groups, & others, under the cover of "social cohesion" - get help!
Most people now know about proposed cuts to Southall Black Sisters
(who have won a 2 month reprieve, due to all the fuss made about the
proposal http://www.southallblacksisters.org.uk/savesbs.htm).

They've got caught between the Government "social cohesion" agenda -
to withdraw funds to single interest groups (aka black groups) because
apparently we, the public, find it divisive - and the peculiar fervour
of darra singh (ealing council CEO) who proposed this policy.

But did you know that the Public Law Project has advised on a number
of cases recently, including Southall Black Sisters. So there is help
to challenge this. You can contact PLP for free advice on 020 7697
2198, Monday to Friday 10 am to 4 pm, or at
e...@publiclawproject.org.uk."

I've just been sent this information from LVSC about state of play on
single issue funding....it is just so blatantly anti multicultural or
should we call it for what it is: racism? where's the evidence base
that such groups cause resentment and what sort of resentment is the
govt talking about - full blown racism?  we need to register our
resentment and ask what this govt intends to do about it....here's the
info from LVSC....

Following the report by the Commission on Integration and Cohesion
(see: http://www.integrationandcohesion.org.uk/) that urged local
authorities to make "single group funding" - that is funding for a
group that works with people of one single ethnicity, religion or
culture  - the exception rather than the norm, London Voluntary
Service Council (LVSC) has been following the government's response
closely.

The Government's "Cohesion guidance for Funders" is still unclear
about this issue. It recommends that local authorities have a
community cohesion strategy and use this as a basis for decisions
about grants and that funders do not fund single groups for activities
which do not have an evidence-based need and will cause "resentment in
others". However, the consultation document gives at least six
references to single groups which evidence shows should be funded:

· Young black men involved in crime
· Victims of hate crime
· Women's services
· Victims of domestic violence
· Black boys who don't do well at school
· Newly arrived young people

If you would like to do something about this issue, we suggest you:

Respond here by the May 26th deadline:
http://www.communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/cohesionfunder....

Attend LVSC's event on Tuesday 13th May to explain equalities
legislation and allow people to contribute to the consultation. For
more details, and to book, see here:
http://www.lvsc.org.uk/templates/information.asp?nodeid=98272&i1pnid=...

Contribute to LVSC's research. LVSC is collecting information about
any organisations that are or might be facing a similar threat
