I'm trying to use an app that will allow me to keep my bookmarks between PCs at college (which are running either XP or 2000) as things like bookmarks don't get saved. But as IE has been locked right down (can't even open a new window - go figure!) I can't see what the proxy settings are! I've tried whatismyip and entering the external IP as the proxy, but that would be too simple now!
Also, while I'm here, they insist on setting their brand new monitors and PCs at 60Hz for the new builds, and it really does give me a shocking headache after less than half an hour. Again, control panel has been disabled - is there any sneaky workaround so that I, at least, don't develop epilepsy?!

For the monitor issue contact the college's IT Dept. and ask them to change their refresh rate. Or purchase an LCD monitor where the refresh rate isn't applicable.
For bookmark synchronization, consider using the new Google sync. It is free and will probably work with your network setup. If not, then ask the college's IT Dept. for help.
Use Portable Firefox on a flashdrive and install the Foxmarks extension. It's free and works across an unlimited number of machines. I use it behind my company's firewall.

The easist way to to confer/negoiate with the campus IT department. Violations of IT standards via some sneaky method is a shortcut to loss of privliges or status as a student.

Actually, if truth be told, that was what I WAS doing :) But I didn't want to mention the F word here!
The situation is that, of course, IE is setup with a proxy, which I can't see what it is. The IT dept aren't talking - in fact, they don't really understand what I mean! (More in another post)

Heh! Being England/Nu Labour, of course, what has happened is that the college have been obliged, at huge expense, to outsource everything to a variety of different companies. So, the builds are done at one place, the PCs and monitors are supplied by another place, and installed by yet another. And the "helpdesk" on site seems to be limited to looking blankly and scribbling complaints on bits of paper. Then losing them. "Dunno, you'll have to contact x about that, mate. We don't deal with that here".

If you can drool, sit at a pc using messenger all day, and go "mmmggg" every now and again to disturb those around you, they're happy to keep you as a student!

As noted above, the IT dept would almost certainly not know what a refresh rate was :) Moreover, I asked last year, and they just won't do it. There's no actual Health and Safety regulation regarding flickering screens (which I find odd), so they won't do it.

Huh?!? Actually, they've got a few lcd monitors around, but they're always in use.

Tried that - again, nothing, not even a toolbar, will install.
