INFORMATION: Please note that this is not a ‘taught’ or ‘led’ group
What’s It All About? It’s a way to let go and find your own dance, that which you want to express. To explore the different sides of who you are, to lose your inhibitions in the joy of dancing. There is no ‘right’ way to dance - this is for everyone who wants to be free to dance their own dance. We use a format based on the work of Gabrielle Roth. The Five RhythmsTM, Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness form the Wave, a dance form that crosses the boundaries between aerobic exercise and spiritual impulse. "The fastest way to still the mind is to move the body." - Gabrielle Roth
Everyone is welcome, whatever limitations or experience you have. The only way to really understand what we do is to come and dance! Please arrive before 7.30 and plan to stay for the entire session.
What To Expect
The music is very varied. We dance to 'world' music, techno, pop, latin, swing, and lots more, with a different DJ every week! It can seem unnerving/exciting when you first begin coming. Despite how it looks, not everybody knows everybody - though as time goes by this practice can be a great way to make new friends.
There's no rush for anything. Take your time; go with what works for you. We're all different and that's to be honoured and celebrated.
People may be experimenting with being loud, big, bold, timid, intimate, self-contained. Its fine to move away from or towards someone - being aware at all times of other people’s personal space. Give yourself permission to experiment - in your own way. Respect other people and their process and expect respect for yours.
Information that might be useful for your first sessions:
You can't get it wrong, or right, for that matter - it's a chance to explore movement for yourself.
Wear something light that gives you freedom to move. A warmer layer on top is useful for quieter moments in the dance.
Take time to ‘arrive’ early. Some ‘warm-up’ music will be playing to help you loosen up. Use this time to stretch, move, and let the journey drop away, before the ‘Wave’ begins.
At the end of the session, there is a brief ‘quiet’ time which we ask everyone to respect. After this there will be a group ‘circle’ in which you will have an opportunity if you wish to speak about any feelings that came up for you in the dance.
Some notes on safety and wellbeing:
People usually dance either barefoot or in trainers. Socks are too slippy. It's a good idea also to remove jewellery and watches. If they're sharp or dangly they may catch on you or someone else.
Be responsible for the well-being of your body. Don’t overdo things. Drink plenty of water.
We strive to
maintain an atmosphere of safety and trust in which everyone can freely express
themselves through the dance.
Most importantly, we hope you will feel free to "Dance like nobody is watching!"
