So I just got the blackberry storm and downloaded google maps. I know
this has an unlocked gps chip, however, when I downloaded the program,
it just has the little blue dot with the large blue circle around it.
I don't know why it wouldn't be specific because there is gps on it.

I second that. No GPS on Google Maps. GPS only for VZNav and BBmaps.
Still trying to figure the issue out. When I look at the default in
the Options -> Advanced Options -> Maps tab BBmaps is the only one the
shows up.
How do we get the Googlemen to play nice with Verizon? Don't they want
technology savvy folk to be able to own these things?
I think Google needs to update their code... something is not set up
properly to work with the Storm. All other GPS enabled apps work fine,
unlike past Verizon Blackberrys, but Google just uses my location
never switching over to true GPS.

I downloaded ms live maps but for some reason it does not do anything
when i push it on my blackberry storm. Do you think its compatible? is
it good? is it worth the hassle?

I'm also waiting on a google maps update for the storm. On my
previous microsoft mobile phone I used windows live because of its
voice search option, but Live doesn't have that feature for
blackberry's (and as someone pointed out it doesn't even open on the
storm).
Come on google, give us maps for the storm :P (and if you can kick
that voice search you did on the iphone our way it would be
appreciated)
Thanks

when u load google maps on the sotrm a message comes up and states
that it is accurate up to 3000 feet which is
approximately a half a mile. if the gps is turned on on ur storm it
should be accurate within its accuracy. google does
need to post an update specifically for the storm but this may not
come bc of the relationship between google and
verizon and also since google has it's focus on their g1 phone. as
per the windows live functionality on the storm
i highly doubt that it will come about since microsoft is a bitch of a
company and can't make their own stuff work
right. but i may be just expressing my hatred for microsoft and the
lack of competition they have in the market.
one good thing i have read is that android will be able to run on the
storm. but all in all everyone can blame rim and the
people at blackberry for putting no money into application development
and making sure common programs that
most mobile users have become accustom to using will work on their
device upon its release. i know how frustrating this is b/c i
have owned 4 blackberry's including the storm and rim had done nothing
to develop apps or make sure apps from other software
manufacturers work on their device. maybe focus should be turned to
rim and we should take this discussion to them. i love my
blackberry as i'm sure all of u do too, so maybe we can try to kick
start a movement at rim to get things done.

I agree to a point. i think you obviously dislike microsoft which
might eat up rim eventually.
However, I have e-mailed rim about app development and such. However,
they wouldn't be paying google to make their product compatible --
that is up to google to do. I think now that RIM has gone for a
consumer based approach with the curve/pearl/storm and partially bold
(which is partially designated towards business) they may start doing
more app development. I hope!

i could see RIM being fazed out by apple, but microsoft??? Microsoft
just sells operating systems, software and the xbox360. they are not
in the cell phone production
business.if they are i have heard nothing. except for the fact tht
bill gates owns like 8% of apple now so i doubt he will want or need
to make a cell phone. since there
are also rumors that microsoft and gates are looking into buying the
competition, since gates has $25 billion of assets in his control as
of Aug '07.
i'm glad RIM has embraced the new technology, but they have to do app
development if they want to compete. the g1 and the iphone
will destroy RIM if they continue to sit around and do nothing. i
have created a huge blackberry following with my friends and i have
used all 3 phones discussed and for
easy no brainer simple thinking folks out there the iphone and g1 will
put RIM to the test. after doing a little research on the net i have
found out that google pays
TeleAtlas maps for their mobile maps and NavTeq for their web based
maps. also with this info i have found out that google may pay
royalties to these companies
everytime 1 of us uses their maps online or on our mobile devices. so
maybe RIM throwing money at google may help some of this stuff get
corrected. it's just a
thought. we will just have to see if i can sell apple my storm the
way i sold RIM my iphone when we are all holding bricks in our hands,
since that appears what may
happen. if i wasn't for verizon i don't think the storm would have
ever been put in production. it is a game of patience and only time
will tell.

google it, there are tons and tons of rumors. No idea if they will
actually be true, but its out there. And RIM is trying to compete
because they are launching the app storefront in March. So they are
working on it, we just have to wait. This is new to them so it's
taking them a little while to get things moving.

One aspect you should consider is from the Verizon side. I don't
think you can blame Google for the lack of GPS on Blackberries. It
works on Blackberries on any other network besides Verizon. I set
someone up on it who uses AT&T on an 8830 and he had accuracy within
yards. Verizon has purposely blocked third party applications from
accessing the GPS capabilities in order to lock customers into their
own applications, which typically require monthly fees. VZ Navigator
is the prime example. Why would they want you to have a free option
when they can force you to buy theirs?

You're right, it does depend on the carriers. However, the GPS on the
storm is unlocked (unlike all of verizons other blackberrys) so 3rd
party GPS apps WILL work on it

yes the gps on the storm is unlocked. i think verizon has realized
that people will go where they can get apps that work and that are
free. money is the most powerful
speaking tool. people will take their business elsewhere if they feel
so inclined or they may not even look at verizon or the storm if they
know it comes no where close
to offering the things that the g1 and i phone presently offer. but
one must remember when reading this i am just voicing my opinion and
we all know what people say
about them. it is good to see another who is as knowledgeable in this
area as myself. but time will tell and if u all have a storm like i
do u presently know some of the
issues with it and the dire need for RIM to release a software update
to control some of the bugs. it appears that a lot of the issues
discussed in the pre release reviews
done by the techy world are still occurring on the device even though
it has been released. i hope before the year end we will all see this
update available and hopefully
google will understand the importance of making a maps app specific
for this device.
