Most of the time google desktop searches take more than 30 seconds,
but once in a while they are less than 1 second.

I have tried reinstalling GDS to no avail.  It has been this way for
the better part of a year now.

I have this problem in both IE7 and chrome.

I have tried disabling/modifying all firewall and antivirus programs
as suggested in http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12645.

Using process explorer to monitor during searches, GDS is using
minimal processor and is reading less that 10 KB/second.

Any ideas what else to try?

Hi,

Use the latest version of IE or better the Google Chrome v3 (and set
this as default browser).

Do follow check list:
- unistall Google Desktop
- restart computer
- Clear you temp files and remove follow folder:
   + remove the "Google Desktop" folder in C:\Program files
   + remove the "Google Desktop" folderin C:\Users\[USER]\AppData\Local
\Google
- download and install the latest Google Desktop on desktop.google.com
(current version 5.9)
- when Google Desktop is indexing, then press the follow key: windows
logo + L
Now you see the welcom screen (window xp, users). Here the Google
Desktop search is running fast.
Wait about +/- one hour. Then log back on => the first indexing must
be finished.

I had tied doing the clean removal and reinstall several months ago,
so I am a bit hesitant to destroy my index.  Has Google updated
something this will fix, or is it just the standard first suggestion
for trouble shooting?

Off topic, is there a way to have the forum email when some the thread
is updated?  I waited so long to respond because I thought it would
automatically email me.

The clean install doesn't fix the problem for me. This problem has
been reported time and again, but there has been no solution from
Google.

It is very frustrating because as you have seen, the system can do a
fast search, but it does not usually do so.
