I'm trying to find the tile of a series of books I read as a kid in
the 1970s.

They were fore-runners of graphic novels in which the reader chose the
path the hero would take on each page -- in the style of the Choose
Your Adventure series that came later -- then flip to the right page
for that option.

Don't forget that if your library holds the Guardian (or yesterday's
Observer) to nab the rather nice reproductions of British comics
before somebody else does. Yesterday's was the 2000th Beano from 1981
and today's the "Roy Shot" issue of Roy of the Rovers.

We've got the Dandy and Bunty to come apparently.

It's looking like this may be a moot point now. Would seem that he
won't be allowed to study Watchmen as it isn't classed as "continuous
prose", though I would have thought that the depth, scope, themes and
characterisation would have compensated for this!

If they pick up on the Comic Studies Reader, Understanding Comics and
Eisner, they should be ok. There is probably enough out there to help
them 'get' the grammar of the comic bits nailed... It is working at a
high level, I have to say. The whole book is worth a number of books
worth of work, so they may want (if wordage etc allow) to focus down

I know it is manga (although the manga influence varies considerably),
but I would go for the Manga Shakespeare comedies...

Hope Larson a fab creator... have really enjoyed all the titles I've
come across so far.. Salamander Dream was lovely.

Mind you, nearly all British comics for girls were written and drawn
by men of that age and, amazingly, some of those titles sold 800, 000
a week at peak! I suspect that one can never be sure what readers will

Hi all,

I'm curious as to your opinions of a senior high school pupil choosing
'Watchmen' as their Higher English Personal Study text.

It is likely that the pupil would have a tougher job than his peers as
he would be investigating visuals as well as text, but I think
'Watchmen' is has so much to recommend it.

Well, if I could be so bold...

We tend to highlight new material that gets us excited every week over
on [link] (that's the Gosh Comics blog). Plus
there's a general new release list.

In fairness, a number of stores actually do a weekly update on their
new GN releases, but most only reproduce the publisher's blurb.

I would say that, unfortunately, they've actually ceased the line.
Critically speaking, I would say they were always a bit of a mixed bag
and the idea that a line targeted towards teenage girls mainly being
written by men in their 30's & 40's was a bit strange.

Something I would highly recommend for girls that feels more like what

You'd have to give me a better idea of what you wanted to look for.
One series that is just coming into the UK is the Myths and Legends
series from Lerner Books. These are pretty slim but some of the
artwork is lovely and I've found them great to use with YA readers.

I've read a few of these and I actually think they're not bad. Fast paced and lively.

Some of them may not appeal to a younger audience - for example Good as Lily by Derek Kirk Kim seems to me something that you really have to be a bit older and have had regrets about parts of your life to really appreciate.

Hi Melanie,

I'm glad you managed to make something useful from the quizzes.

There are some noticeable differences in Get Backers (cert 12), a good example being towards the end of the first episode/volume. Too complicated to go into here but the manga ending has a much darker and adult edge to it.

I know, I feel the same way. If something print and ink and comes out of
the Super Comics Adventure Squad we should all nag our authorities into
buying it!

Did Ben mention why it was folding? I guess it just wasn't making enough
money. A shame as a non-commercial sub only model seems very British.
