It's 3 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. You're in charge. What do you put on air? 1) Scotland v Wales Rugby Union live from Murrayfield in Gaelic (also available on BBC1 in English) 2) Newtonmore v Kingussie in Gaelic (exclusive to the Gaelic channel) 3) Serie A Lazio v Roma in Gaelic (shown previously in English on pay TV)
None - I switch to the live TX by PTTV from the Stadium of Dreams on the Mighty Jags - with Gaelic commentary! On 30 Aug, 13:30, iain <i...@gms.org.uk> wrote:

I've seen a couple of the programmes in the "An Caman" series and the thing that struck me most (and I don't follow shinty, I have to confess) is the fact that there appear to be no spectators. I wonder what sort of on-the-ground following the TV coverage reflects ... or perhaps it's generating more interest in actually going to see the game live?

Is there any reason why several Scottish Football League programmes should not be broadcast with Gaelic commentary (using simultaneous screening), in the same way that Radio Scotland commentates on several football games on Saturday afternoons, or is there not enough bandwidth?

None of the above. I am not a sports fan (might watch some swimming or Olympics) and the medium (Gaelic) isn't going to make the content more interesting to me. But I really do want this sort of programming to be available. It's not all about 'me'! I think it's important that big sporting events should be available - whether on radio or tv - with Gaelic commentary. TG4 in Ireland gets some of its biggest audiences for Gaelic Games, drawing in audiences who wouldn't normally watch an Irish language station with coverage that can't be found elsewhere.

none of the above....i would put on one of the 8 Scottish Rally Championship rallies, which has plenty of gaelic speakers in the teams and even more spectating which equals quality veiwing.

I agree that the best way forward is to broadcast sports coverage that isn't available on any other channel. This could of course include popular sports like football but instead of the premier league why not look to local teams across the highlands and islands (which i think 'An Caman' does from time to time) There are also things like basketball where Scotland has a successful but fairly unknown team. The rally is another fine example Andrew.

This weekend we have commissioned coverage of the Fort William 2007 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships - which will be shown in Gaelic on STV the following week. This is the kind of stuff that we really shouldn't miss, and I am really pleased that we are doing this. Expect more (that is, if I have my way!)

the rallying would be good in the fact that the audience are limited to watching the world rally championship late on a Sunday night(when some of the competitors don't even speak english never mind gaelic!). With this sort of thing on you will have a non-gaelic speaking audince as well as gaelic speakers tuning in to watch it because it is not available on any other channel. With this sort of programming you could have the "big boys" such as channel 4,itv,eurosport etc. buying the footage as well.
Andrew.

I pick as my first choice Newtonmore v Kingussie in Gaelic (exclusive to the Gaelic channel)
Shinty is Scotland's own home grown sport and not an English import like Rugby or Football.
Second choice would be Scotland v Wales Rugby Union live from Murrayfield in Gaelic (also available on BBC1 in English), Football is way too overblown as a sport, with too many spoiled high price players.
