Subject: poignant question on remembrance day

Hi
One of the TURNER families I am researching is
HERBERT STANLEY TURNER
born 1891 married Sept qt 1917
died the Somme 24th March 1918

Question 1
On his will made 11.dec 1917 he left all his worldly good to his wife
MINNIE TURNER nee LISGO
of 1Greystone Road Carlisle.
would this be near the Fuzehill end or near Warwick Road?
Question2
If she remarried would she use her maiden name or married name on the certificate, and if any children born which name would be used?

Herbert Stanley Turner was on his will serving in the 3rd Durham light Infantry
but on the C.W.Graves site it says 15th Bn. Durham etc. and at time of missing presumed dead was Second Lieutenant.
Can only find mention of death on Ancestry but no other records i.e.
widows pension and his usual records

Any help re these question, would close the file on this brave man
Pauline Stanley nee Turner

Hi Pauline,

Re Question 2:

Once Minnie was married to Herbert Stanley TURNER, strictly speaking she should have used the surname TURNER until she married again, and any children born to her while her surname was TURNER should also have had the surname TURNER.

However, occasionally a woman did got back to her maiden name some time after her husband's death, particularly if it was only a very short marriage without any children.

Petra

Yes if she remarried her name would be recorded as Turner but any children
would be recorded as mothers name Lisgo.

Herbert Stanley Turner medal card -

This is the only record I can find, the WW1 records are not complete as a large proportion were destroyed during the Blitz.

" Burnt documents

Although five million soldiers from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales fought in World War One, around 60 per cent of the service records for these soldiers were destroyed during a German bombing raid on the War Office in London in September 1940. "
