Subject: Coast 2 Coast: Devon
Hi guys and gals

The Coast to Coast Devon 2 day race looks like it is possibly going to
be an awesome event in the calendar. I have done a few xterra type
races and enduro events (specifically mountain bike marathons and
running races) and am considering signing up for Devon C2C.

The only thing is that although I do a lot of cycling events (up to
100k races) these are MTB rides and not road riding. I in fact do not
have a road bike. I am confortable with trail runs, road runs, MTBing
and even the kayaking required for this race, but wanted to know if
anyone has done this event before and what bikes are used for the road
ride section?

I guess the ultimate questions would be - can I get around the course
by having slicks on my MTB for the road ride section and switching
back to nobbly tires for the MTB section the next day? Will I make the
cut off times and am I going to be Nigel no friends at the back of the
group if I use my mountain bike?

Your thoughts and suggestions welcome...

D

Hi D,

I did the Devon Coast to Coast last year, and i think that nearly
everyone rode on a mountin bike - I did.

I put some slicks on it and pumped the tyres upto 100PSI and away you
go.

At the overnight camp, i changed my tyres back to MTB tyres for the
second day. No problem. It does mean that you have to put two tubes
and tyres in your overnight bag, but the space that this took up was
well worth it as it made day one much easier.

The MTB leg on day 2 was a bit muddy in places but super bad. You
could make do with a hybrid tyre and not change or use something like
the Kenda small block 8 which is good off road, but pretty fast on the
road. Personally i would change tyres.

There was a mix of abilities last year so dont worry about times as
you will be fine.

I planning on doing the one day event this year so tyre choice will be
more important (unless they are allowing a change of bike!!)

Hope this helps and see you there. It is a great event and well
organised.

Hello everyone,

Internet is great, being in sunny Algarve/Portugal how else would you
find out about this events?

I am considering doing this, it sounds great.

Questions:

1. Run, what type of shoes would recomend? Light trainers, or
something more robust?

2. Bike, personally I have a mountain bike a road bike. Is the road
good enough for a road bike? On the mountain bike ride, what is the
type of terrain? Mud? Gravel? Fast? Hard? Technical? Is possible to
obtain an elevation graphic, both of the road and mountain sections?

3. From my understanding of the site event the organization does
provide sit-on-top kayaks, right?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Last year i used my normal road running trainers (saucaony). No
problems, bit muddy in places, but not that bad.

For the two day race, i think you are required to use a MTB. Thats why
on day one you can use slicks and then switch to off road tyres for
day 2. Mixed terrain trails in teh UK can be all of what you described
depending on the rain leading up to the event.

Not sure what the crack is for one day race!

Yes they provided kayaks and paddles and PFD's last year, but check
with them for this year.

Hope this helps
