There's actually two parts to the ONEt recovery - a uimage file that's
loaded using Shift+Fn+F1 and a recovery image loaded using F3.

The versions of the two parts need to match - I had a problem with USB
devices after I did an F3 load without the matching uImage load - see

I was trying to display Japanese characters on the Web browser.
Referring to some web sites, I created the directory "TrueType" under
the "/lib/X11/fonts" directory. I copied a truetype font file into the
"TrueType" directory and also created the "fonts.dir" in the same
directory. I am nearly certain that the place I created is right.

I think you overestimated this little laptop:
The Elonex does not have 2 GB RAM, it has 2GB Flash memory divided in 1GB for the operating system and 1 GB for the user. It has only 128MB ram so any photoediting and such will be problematic. The processor used in the Elonex is an Jz4730 from Ingenic which is MIPS compatible (not Intel or AMD) which means you can not simply install another OS unless it is specifically made for this processor and hardware.

I have obtained a machine it has 2gb ram and currently a 2gb sd
installed. 32 gb SD ordered

The primary funtion is a holiday PC for email, posting picture to
picasa, editing photos, playing video and music. The media programme
with the OS is poor and there is no viable photo editor

The Windows CE version from Maplin is not the same Hardware specs as the
ONEt. The processors are of two different Architecture. The ONEt is a Mipsel
and the Maplin is an ARM.

What software are you trying to download?? by version 9 to 10 makes me feel
you are trying to download Windows Media Player.

Please be aware, this is not supported by the OS on OneT+

There is already a media player on the OneT but it is limited in
functionality due the hardware specs.

I'm still here - things are a bit quiet at the moment - apart from the
new versions of the machine which Maplin are advertising - Maplin have
some "B-grade" ONEt equivalents at around £90 - meanwhile Elonex have
sold out of ONEt's and have moved on to promoting an eBook being sold
by Borders bookshop...

This shouldn’t be as difficult as it is.

Many thanks for your response. I found out how to make things happen at
boot. I added the following line to the script /etc/init.d/rcS:

echo 1 > /proc/jz/iwifi

Once I did that and rebooted, the wifi sprang into life and furthermore it
also automatically connected to my preferred network.

Windows CE is rather limited as to available software. Windows Mobile
software (as used on pda's and smartphones) won't run, neither will
most mainstream Windows software. This was the problem which
confronted buyers of the Psion Netbook Pro which used CE instead of
the much better (at least regarded so by Psion fans) EPOC system on

wikipedia's entry for "subnotebooks" I see it may have been done
commercially in China, but is that a whole different computer? Any

where /path_to_swapfile will probably be a path to a file which you will be
creating on the SD card.

On the other hand Micro$oft Vista's "ReadyBoost" feature is exactly
that - putting a swap file onto a USB flash memory stick.

So, there might be some slight advantage in putting a swap file onto a
USB stick or the SD card - if it did wear out you could replace the
memory stick or SD card, and before you reached that point you may get

Although you may be able to enable the swap, i would recommend not to as the
Storage on the OneTs are flash memories and these may wear out too early due
to tremendous writing.
