Subject: Elonex OneT+

Hello there everyone. I guess that there are two versions of the elonex oneT+ and a few variations. Is it possible to convert a Windows version to Linux and vica versa? Saying that, this machine has come a long way from the spectrum 48K except for the instruction manual which gives no details of the machines capacity etc. Can someone advise of how far the machine can be pushed and the maximum size of the programs it can run. Thanks. Bill

As you mention Windows, maybe you are thinking of the Elonex Webbook -
http://shop.elonex.com - which originally came in both Linux and
Windows XP flavours - sadly the £199 Ubuntu Linux version no longer
seems to be available, only the £299 Windows version - which tells you
how much you are paying for the privilege of getting Windows software.

There was also the Original Elonex One with its removable keyboard -
you can see a comparison of it and the ONEt at -
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/elonexone/web/hardware-comparison -
the "Plus" generally indicates more flash drive memory and the "T" is
probably intended to indicate the "Touchpad" input device that's on
the ONEt models.

There are a number of competitors to the Webbook - for example there's
a Toshiba Netbook NB100-11R currently available from
http://morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=5274 at £183.99
- HP and others also have similar mini-notebooks which are sometimes
available at similar prices.

Cheers

Ed

Subject: Email groups versus Bulletin Board forums
As you gather ('cos I set one up) I quite like email groups in
preference to Web Forums.

Why?

Forums are great when there are lots of members and they are all
checking every day to see what's happening and constantly entering
replies or adding their own stories.

But, they are hopeless when this is not the case. You put your
question on the forum, nobody who knows the answer reads your entry
and you get no feedback except when someone says "I had that problem
too".

But, on an email group, you put your question and it goes to the
majority of members whatever, and you are therefore more likely to get
one or more of them thinking "I know the answer to that - I'll just
pop a quick reply off".

Both Forums and Email groups also need good search facilities - so you
can check to see if your question has been answered before - and in
general the offerings from Google and Yahoo and the major BB writers
seem to do this quite well.

So I think there's room for both - and I hope people continue to post
their questions and answers about the Elonex machines here - and I
hope more members join this group so we can share our joint knowledge
- because whether it's a forum or an email group the whole thing
depends on having a core group of active members.

Have fun.
