Subject: Automating WiFi connection at startup
Hi,

I am successfully using WiFi on my Onet+, but this requires me to do
the following after boot up:

1. Run the wireless-lan utility from the Internet tab (or run /bin/
wireless-lan from the command line)
2. Explicitly connect to my SMC router from the list of networks
shown.

Has anybody got the "Preferred Network" conection to work for them,
i.e. do you connect automatically to your preferred wifi router when
running wireless-lan, as I cannot?

Also I would like the whole process of the wifi connection to be done
automatically at boot time. I can see that the driver (zd1211b) is
loaded using lsmod, but the device eth1 does not exist until you run /
bin/wireless-lan. If I try to run modprobe then I get the message
"cannot parse modules.dep". Without eth1 being there I cannot try and
script iwconfig to set up the connection.

Does anybody have any ideas, please? I had a quick look for the source
code of the wireless-lan utility at http://194.150.201.35/cnmlifestyle/cnmbook/sourcecode.htm
but I don't think it is part of the wireless_tools bundle.

Hi DesA,

My Trendtac (about the same as Elonex but in the Netherlands) connects
automatically everytime I start up the laptop.
Mind though: it takes between 10 and 20 seconds after the desktop
appears that the WiFi symbol turns orange and I can use the link.

I remember installing a Wifi patch from Trendtac which also enables
better wireless key options (Ascii).
The patch is still on my temporary webspace:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~jostht/epc/

Maybe it will help.

Gert

Gert,

Many thanks for your response. I found out how to make things happen at
boot. I added the following line to the script /etc/init.d/rcS:

echo 1 > /proc/jz/iwifi

Once I did that and rebooted, the wifi sprang into life and furthermore it
also automatically connected to my preferred network.

Strange that I had to do that! I had already updated my Onet+ to the veryt
latest patch level.

Best regards,

DesA

Ah, yes, the Elonex OneT has the Wifi built-in.

The Trendtac comes with a separate USB WiFi dongle..

I managed to put it into the screen/lid but it is always powered up
since the circuit which responds to the /proc/jz/iwifi pin is non
existant in the Trendtac:

Maybe it is default security precaution to not switch on the WiFi..
