National memorial & Emma Hardinge Britten

National memorial by Spiritualists for Spiritualists.

The Spiritualist National Union is raising money for a major memorial;  “In memory of Spiritualists who have served, and continue to serve, in the British and Commonwealth Armed forces.”

At this year's AGM in July the idea was overwhelmingly approved to commission a substantial monument with a cost of about £20,000. This sounds a lot, but think of it like this: 200 donations of £100 = £20,000. At the AGM we received the first 5 x £100’s and many churches pledged to put on fundraising events.

Remembrance Day is only one day a year but we can have something that is a permanent tribute to Spiritualists who have and are currently serving in H.M. Armed Forces. The memorial will be placed at the National Memorial Arboretum where people from all over the world will be able to see it every day of the year, and forever.

The National Memorial Arboretum is situated just south of Burton upon Trent, by the side of the A38, near the village of Alrewas; see http://www.thenma.org.uk . At present the site covers some 150 acres and has permanent memorials to most branches of the Armed Forces alongside memorials to other national organisations that serve this country, such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance services and Charities.

   Minister Steven Upton

I ask all our churches to consider a fundraiser to support our Memorial Fund and also to dedicate your Remembrance Sunday service collections. We have 360 churches; if the average collection is £30 that would raise an additional £10,800.

I also invite individual Spiritualists to donate to this fund and send me design ideas for the memorial.
Cheques to be made payable to: ‘SNU National Memorial Fund.’
