Subject: Uses for an A7000 #102
I never particularly found my A7000 to be usable as a desk-top computer,
but I've put it to some interesting uses over the years.

For a long time it was sitting in the network awaiting commands, then
performing, for example, an upload using FTPc. Then for a time it was
randomly uploading different images to my home page at
www.locationworks.com. A couple of years ago it was detecting the calendar
date and uploading different versions of our logo, for example on April
Fool, or St Patricks' Day.

Since then it has been languishing on a shelf, now however it has been
brought out of retirement, and is non-stop all day long playing random
tracks from a CD pumped into our telephone switchboard to be heard as
"hold music".

Acorn computers being the workhorses they are, I'm glad it's still in use.

Oh, well, my entire website is still created and maintained using Risc OS.
In fact I'm sitting here in front of an array of three RPC's, one Iyonix
and two PC's. The local copy of the web site is held on a Linux server
which deals with scanning for changes and overnight upload, checking links
and etc.

Although we are developing server-side databases to take over the creation
of HTML pages, I'll be continuing to create the editorial pages using for
Risc OS for the foreseeable future.

I'm the only one here now using ROS, mind you. All the RiscPC's were
replaced by PC's over the last couple of years :-(

I use my Risc PC at work for two main activities:

1) Capturing and analysing D channel data from telephone calls;

2) Developing and running a test application for a USB device that
I designed.

It gets used for all sorts of odd little other things too.

Most of my Risc PC use is at home these days, though it still gets used
for the odd bit of DTP for work on occasion. Most of it gets done on
Miyuki at home, then touch-ups get done on the works machine courtesy of a
Red Squirrel setup (previously a VA5000 setup but it kept going flaky on
me so, as I had a RS setup ready to run, I replaced it).

I use 9 Risc PCs with primary age children (or should I say I and my
staff) and use 1 in my office for document processing, spreadsheet
data, design work and developing Textease material for children to use
covering all aspects of the taught ICT curriculum. 1 Risc PC is used
as a rolling display in the entrance hall.
The school website (approaching its 10th anniversary) is entirely
produced on Risc PC or the Iyonix at home with some occasional work
done in Virtual RPC-SE on the laptop.

In April, 9 of the Risc PCs will be for sale as Textease CT will be
our staple tool, and there is not a RISCOS version. My office machine
will be retained, however, as it is easier to maintain the academic
network on that rather than use a PC, and I'll still be continuing
with my staple jobs (as above)!! I do however, need the PC (shared
through a KVM) for viewing e-mail and dissecting large Excel
spreadsheets with macros activated.

Best wishes

In articles previously in the thread, 'Uses were being discussed'.

My contribution ...

My Risc machine is used in native format to produce all my A level notes and work
related work sheets for school. Most of the admin is done on my (hopeless PeeCee),
aaalthough I do produce Techwriter documents, that I convert into PDF for
 distribution to my work colleagues.

After the dimise of my (hopeless) PeeCee earlier this week:
Due to an internal skool 'upgrade' that was faulty... (!)

I was glad that I had made a backup (everyweek) of my PeeCee HD onto a massive
external HD.

That my RiscOS machine worked when I switched it on, sanity replaced

That I had not lost any of my work on the RiscOS machine (touch the Acorn) in
a what must be life time of use on my native platform

Although I have corrupted the !Boot file on a couple of occasions, once
you get the desktop back, copy over the last working copy .... it 'WORKS'

I asked .ICT (our ICT support) for an Apple (they won't support the A4 - still running)
but they said no.

They have just bought in some 'new laptops' to introduce Vista ......

When that comes in .... I will well be on the route to retirement.
The cash investment per machine is gross...
    The power use is obscene
The compatibility on my software is virtually nil (but I don't buy it)

All in all Bill $ates I am afraid can throw his money back in to the community as he
fleeces the majority of PeeCee uses hand over fist.

My daughter has come home from Uni - needs a Mac ....
Why the PeeCee has not got the required programs to do the work in her area of study....

What do they have in their dept Macs and a coupe of A7000s!!

Enough said

I also like the non-upgrading of software by 'automatic methods' - which

Shame it's in the form of torture for callers to Kell's company :( I wish
people would just use a simple intermitant beep or something rather than
impose their taste in tinny music on me!

I beg your pardon! Bach, Beethoven, Mozart!

Our Panasonic switchboard doobry leaves callers in total silence when
they're on hold.

I suppose I could record a CD of beeps, mind you. If there were variety it
could be quite funny.

I did put on a CD of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald etc, but there are
copyright problems alas.

How about using some examples from some sound effects records :-)

I believe they are copyright free and the effect on your callers could be
quite "interesting"
