Well, in France I /do/ drive on the other side of the road, yes.  Why?
Because everyone else does, and it's appropriate to follow the local
custom.

I agree that everyone /ought/ to be taught to post properly, but if
you're reading a newsgroup where everyone else top-posts[1] then it's
politer and more sensible to conform to the local style.

[1] Personally, I'm happy to say that I don't read any such groups,
   because all the groups I'm interested in are full of people who
   know how things should be done.
