Subject: Huge scrap directory
Browsing through directories which I have never looked at before (as
one does on a wet Saturday morning), I found in the HardDisc4 ->
Utilities I found !ShowScrap. I clicked on it and it opened
ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!BOOT.Resources.!Scrap.ScrapDirs.ScrapDir containing
a HUGE number of hexadecimally-numbered TEXT files, and directories
named after programs, Easiwriter, Messenger, some of these directories
were empty, some of them held similar text files.

I counted  ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!BOOT.Resources.!Scrap.ScrapDirs.ScrapDir
it came to 65MB!

What does this directory do? Should I delete the lot!

It's a place where programs can store temporary files.

If you want. There's no harm leaving it there, but if you want to save
some space (though I doubt 65MB is particularly worrying, is it?) you
could delete the files.

First google for previous discussions of this issue, then read about the
(few) apps that store necesary files in !Scrap.  Check that you're not
deleting any of those first.

Would it be OK simply to delete the contents of the directories rather
than the directories themselves?

Some applications, including Sibelius, have to have their named
directory in Scrap. It would be perfectly safe to delete files,
though, and I personally do so now and again.

Maybe; maybe not.  It depends on what you delete, and when you do it.  For
a start, you shouldn't do it when apps are running, as they can
legitimately store files in Scrap for the duration of the time they are on
the iconbar.

Then make sure you avoid those (few) apps which do store more permanent
data in Scrap (arguably incorrectly).

For 65Mb, is it really worth worrying?  There's 135Mb of data in Scrap
here, and it doesn't seem to cause any problems.

IIRC not always so the best solution is with no apps loaded MOVE all the
subdirs elsewere and if anything fails move the appropriate subdir back and
retry.
