Further to my postings regarding the suspension my Freeuk PAYG account service. This has now happened and it as also taken my broadband freeuk account out as well. On trying freeuk I now get the error 'invalid password' from hermes. Hopefully everything has been transfered to my alternative account.

I still don't understand this part Malcolm since you have already told us your broadband supplier is VIRGIN / NTL - so how can you have had a freeUK broadband account?

To be expected.

What FreeUK Broadband account? You said you used Virgin, when I asked you to clarify before?
If you really do have a FreeUK Broadband account, then this changes the situation a bit.

Who knows? until yesterday I was still down loading from Freeuk

Yes, and it seems OK. Just slightly worried someone may have my old address.

I think he means he was still using the email address associated with his previous FreeUK account, and downloading mail via ntl.

Sorry I cannot be making my situation clear, but then I am somewhat confused on the subject

Well Claranet? said I was not using my PAYG freeuk account though Hermes was downloading mail through it. It was an account I used before I got Virgin broadband and it remained set up in my system. The only provider I pay money to is Virgin so it is somewhat strange that it had not been closed long ago. I do seem to be getting less mail/news than a few days ago but have not pinpointed a reason.

FreeUK certainly /used/ to be connected to Claranet -- it's been a long time since I used the dialup, but IIRC they used some Claranet servers.

That's what I thought: you do *not* have a FreeUK Broadband account (such things do exist, hence the confusion), but a FreeUK PAYG dialup. As with any other ISP, you can access the FreeUK POP mailservers from any other ISP's connection (which you're doing via Virgin), but that doesn't constitute 'using' the account.
What FreeUK would consider 'use' is your dialing in via the 0845 number with a modem. That's how they make money. They make nothing from your downloading mail via a Virgin connection.

FreeUK hold the PAYG accounts for a long time with no activity, presumably to safeguard email addresses if the user is unable to connect for a while. When I signed up, ISTR that the advertised period was 6 months -- although anecdotally the real period seems to be much longer.

If that includes spam, then it's definitely likely -- particularly if you used the FreeUK address on usenet or mailing lists in the past.

YOU DO. Who are you paying for your broadband service?
>>> On trying freeuk I now get the error 'invalid password' from hermes.
If you are currently getting your broadband from FreeUK, this shouldn't be happening. However if you are now getting it from Virgin/NTL and you are trying to access the mailbox of your previous broadband accont at FreeUK, then that explains it.
They are cutting off the mailboxes of anyone who isn't currently paying for a dialup or broadband service. If you still want to use your freeuk email address, you have to pay them £15 a year for a mailbox only account.

This is what has happened to me, although FreeUK wrote offering me an annual payment of UKP15.00 to retain the address.

I would need to look and see what else is available (as it's not something that I've really bothered to investigate up to now), but that doesn't sound too bad at a little over UKP1 per month for a stand-alone POP mail box (particularly if you actually use the address). To get it much cheaper, I would guess you'd be into the Hotmail, Yahoo! or GMail territory.
Perhaps I'd better do some research before FreeUK get in touch here: it's a FreeUK box that's hiding behind this email address, to keep it separate from most of the rest of my email.

Sorry but I made a misleading statement earlier. I do not have a broadband freeuk account. I was accessing freeuk via my virgin broadband account which is no longer possible. Going to forget freeuk now and use other addresses.

That's what I've done. Absolutely no point paying them money for it.
I was only using a freeuk address for newsgroup postings as historically any address used for that received lots of spam. As newsgroups have fallen out of popularity now, there is hardly any spam so I can use the news address on my domain.
