Subject: StrongArm processor
I've just upgraded a RISC OS 3.6 RISC PC with my old RISC OS 3.7 chips.

I believe it's meant to have a StrongArm processor. I've got two old
processor chips, but I don't think either is a StrongArm, as I think I
left the StrongArm processor in the computer when I upgraded my own
machine to 4.02.

Can anyone confirm that this is what happened, or were we given a new
processor with 4.02? If so, how do I recognise a StrongArm processor
chip. If not, where can I get one?

The machine at the moment seems to have a limit for the number of files
in a directory. Is this because I haven't got SA fitted, or is it a
feature of RISC OS 3.7. Do I have to upgrade to 4.02 in order not to
have this limit?

No.

Yes.

No. The StrongARM shipped with RISC OS 3.7. But newer versions of RISC
OS worked with the older processors (NB not the other way round).

A StrongARM card looks like the image in this article:

The others are Arm 600/700s, which are significantly slower; you would
be very wise to look for a SA card on EBay if it isn't.

RISC OS 4.02 (or for that matter 4.39) supports long filenames and >77
files per directory by reformatting the hard disc to a new format. To do
this you need to buy the ROMs (RISC OS Ltd sell a softloadable RO4, but
for reasons which should be obvious you won't be able to use long
filenames or >77 files/directory on your primary hard disc on a
disc-loaded version of 4.02).

If you're considering the OS upgrade, consider whether you plan on
subscribing to Select. If you are, buy 4.02 ROMs, and join Select. If
you aren't, buy 4.39 ROMs - slightly more expensive but significantly
better OS.

Best wishes,

Drew

Not if it was running 3.6 - the StrongARM needs 3.7 as a minimum.

RISC OS 4.0 was the first officially released version to have built-in
support for >77 files in a directory, so yes.
