Subject: Parmesan and more at London RISC OS user group, Monday 18th February 2008
The next meeting of the RISC OS user group of London will be:

Parmesan and other RISC OS internet software
presented by Christian Ludlam and others

   Monday 18th February 2008, 7:45pm
(informal discussions from about 6pm onwards)

   The Blue-Eyed Maid (upstairs)
   173 Borough High Street
   London
   SE1 1HR

MSN is a messaging protocol that allows "live" text conversations with
other Internet users on a wide variety of operating systems.  It also
provides other facilities such as file transfer, and multi-user
conversations.

Parmesan is a free MSN client for RISC OS, and was first publicly released
in September 2007.  Full file transfer facilities were added in November
2007, and last month saw a host of new features including coloured
messages, auto-idle, and more.  Parmesan won the runner up prize for Best
Non-Commercial Program in the Drobe 2007 awards.

Christian Ludlam is Parmesan's author, and will be demonstrating the
software live, as well as talking a little about its development and plans
for future features.

Parmesan can be downloaded from http://parmesan.recoil.org/

The commercial alternative to Parmesan is Grapevine from R-Comp, so we
will also be taking a look at this, and probably at RISC OS clients for
other online communication such as IRC.

In addition, there will hopefully be a short demonstration of CocoGnut,
which is a RISC OS client for the Gnutella peer to peer file sharing
network.  This is a great way to download files that might not be readily
available elsewhere.

If time allows, we will also hopefully be having a look at R-Comp's
MusicMan software.

In short, if your RISC OS internet usage so far has mainly been limited to
email, newsgroups and web browsing, this meeting should give plenty of
ideas as to the extra facilities you could be taking advantage of.

The meeting should benefit from video projection with ROUGOL's video
projector, so everyone should have a great view.  We may also be using our
audio amplification equipment if necessary.

A wide range of hot and cold food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
(quite expensive), will be on sale.  Admittance is free and everyone is
welcome.

Anyone with wireless enabled handhelds or laptops should be able to access
the internet during the meeting, or (if time allows) use ROUGOL's own Risc
PC to do so after the main presentation has finished.  Please speak to
Bryan Hogan if you have problems connecting.

The whole of the venue is now entirely a non-smoking area.  There is
shelter, and sometimes heating, for smokers outside.

The venue is between London Bridge and Borough tube stations, so readily
accessible by public transport (both stations are a five minute walk away,
through well lit and CCTV'd main streets).  It also has ample cycle
parking (covered by CCTV) very close by.

If you are arriving by car, the Congestion Charge ends at 6pm and our
meeting starts much later.  However, please note that parking on double
red lines is restricted at all times.  On single red or yellow lines, it
is best to park after 7pm.  If you aren't completely familiar with
*central* London parking or driving, please allow extra time, patience,
and maps.

If you need any help getting to the venue, please contact us.
